Hawks' Late-Game Rally Falls Short At Mike Daley

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The Hilbert College women's basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit, took a late-game lead but found themselves on the wrong side of the whistle and dropped a 60-59 non-conference loss to Buffalo State College on day one of the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament hosted by Nazareth College.

THE BASICS
⦁    Final Score: Buffalo State 60 Hilbert 59
⦁    Location: Kindera Gym, Nazareth College, 7:00 pm
⦁    Records: Buffalo State College 1-0 (0-0 SUNYAC) Hilbert 1-2 (0-0 AMCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neither team could find any rhythm in the opening session and headed to the second quarter with the Bengals leading, 10-6.
  • The Hawks hit only 2-of-13 attempts from the field while BSC sank 4-of-13 in ten minutes of action. Hilbert controlled the boards pulling down 13 and limited the Bengals to only two offensive rebounds, but still trailed by four points.
  • The royal and white, who picked-up the pace in the second quarter,  secured better inside offensive rebounding position.  Hilbert held a 9-0 advantage in 2nd-chance points, outscored BSC 15-9 in the frame and headed to the locker room up 21-19.  Taylor Corts led all scores with 13 points and Emma Fredo did the same with seven rebounds.
  • Demi Battin hit the Hawks' first shot of the second half before the Bengals went on a 14-2 run (23-33) and forced a Hilbert timeout with over six minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
  • The Hawks sandwiched back-to-back 3-pointers around back-to-back stops on defense and pulled within two points (37-39) before the final quarter.
  • Corts sliced the margin to a one-possession game before BSC jumped back ahead by six points (50-44). Corts, again found room the lane just before Gawlak knotted the game 52-52 with just over 2 minutes left.
  • Macy Kisner stole the ball, went coast-to-coast, finished with a 3-point play and lifted the Hawks (55-54 @ 1:09) for the first time in the final session.
  • Buffalo State scored a scoop lay-up in the paint and went 1-for-2 at the line on their next two possessions taking a 57-55 lead.
  • After Hilbert called a timeout to advance the ball, Gawlak made a reverse lay-up setting a 57-all score.
  • The Hawks fouled right away, gave the Bengals two chances at the line and they score one.
  • On the next full court transition, Gawlak made a pair at the charity stripe and lifted Hilbert back on top - 59-58.
  • The Bengals advanced the ball infront of their bench with a timeout showing 0:04 on the clock.  They converted in the paint (59-60) and gave Hilbert a chance with 0.00.9 to go the length of the floor for the win.
  •  A full court pass was called 'untouched' when the ball sailed out of bounds and BSC gained possession one final time, running the clock out for the win.
  • Taylor Corts led all scorers with 26 points (8 rebounds) fueled by 10 buckets from the floor and a perfect performance from the foul line. Emily Gawlak chipped in 17 points, also went 7-for-8 at the charity stripe and collected three steals.  Macy Kisner led the Hawks with four assists while Emma Fredo matched Corts with team-high eight rebounds.
  • Buffalo State was led by Katie Villarini, who scored the game winning bucket, and Liv LeBaron with 22 points.
GAME NOTES
  • The Hawks closed the game hitting 37% of their attempts, as they bounced back from a 25% effort in the first half balancing it out with a 52% performance in the second half come-back.
  • Hilbert went to the foul line 16 times and converted 13 shots while they controlled the boards (34-30) with a 13-5 advantage on the offensive end.
