Total Team Effort In Hawks Road Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team played like a true team tonight.

Everyone contributed and had a hand in the Hawks' 64-53 non-conference road win at Fredonia State, and with the win, Hilbert improved to 2-3 just before they head to league action this week.

Senior Kelsi Ebert set a new program record with 12 assists as she found open team mates all night. Ebert added a team-best four steals while scoring nine points.

Junior Katelyn Proy earned her second double-double of the season and was impressive in the paint. The 6-2 forward scored 14 points, picked the glass for 13 rebounds and was credited with three blocks although she seemed to redirect multiple Blue Devil shots.

Sophomore Emily Gawlak knocked down 50% of her field goals, leading the Hawks with 17 points and two more second-year players chipped in nine points each.  Junior Morgan McNeill and sophomore Ashley Repine canned four buckets, with McNeill going 1-of-2 from deep and Repine splitting her free throws.

When the Hawks found themselves in foul trouble in the first half, Natassia West played big inside  and added a point from the foul line.  Alayna DeFazio collected four rebounds (two offensive) while Abbey Monahan hit key free throws (3-for-4) down the stretch to secure the win.

At the start of the game, four different players contributed to the Hawks' early 9-0 lead.  Then Katelyn Proy hit back-to-back buckets in the paint (13-2) before Fredonia found their shooting touch.

Emily Gawlak opened the second period with a two-pointer which continued to stretch the Hawks lead, now at 15-7. Fredonia went on a run and knotted the game at 20-20 with just over one minute in the half.  Morgan McNeill, Gawlak and Natassia West lifted Hilbert to a 25-23 half time lead.

Hilbert was ready to take over the game at the start of the second half  The Hawks built a 35-25 lead by 8:03 and forced a Fredonia timeout.  Kelsi Ebert found Proy floating under the hoop on the weak side of the floor for an easy two before the senior guard added two points of her own setting a 43-29 mark at 3:37.  Gawlak added four consecutive points prior to Fredonia's 6-0 run which cut the score to 47-35 just before the start of the fourth quarter.

Twice Hilbert stretched their lead to 13 points early in the fourth, but Fredonia scored seven unanswered points to pull within 5 (52-47) midway through the final quarter.

Ashley Repine (4pts) and Proy found the bottom of the net to extend Hilbert's lead back to double digits and McNeill's layup counted just before the 30-second clock expired for the 60-47 score.  The hosts went on another 7-0 run but Repine and Monahan closed the game at the foul line to secure the win.

Hilbert now prepares for the start of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of their game schedule.  The Hawks will travel to Pitt-Bradford for their 8pm game November 29th.
