Medaille Softball Nips Penn State Behrend in AMCC Doubleheader

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille Maverick softball team edged Penn State Behrend by one run in each of the games of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader on Saturday, winning 4-3 in eight innings and 3-2 in the nightcap.

Game One: Medaille 4, Penn State Behrend 3 (8 innings)
Records: Penn State Behrend (10-10, 4-1 AMCC), Medaille (13-8, 2-1 AMCC) 

Noteworthy: 

* With a 1-all tie after the seventh, the teams combined for five runs in the eighth
* The Mavericks rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off double
* Medaille got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame with a  two-out double to plate one run
* Behrend did not strike until the top of the seventh
* Kayla Salvini (McDonald, PA/Fort Cherry) tripled to right field with two outs showing to score Samantha Manioci (Rochester, NY/Odyssey Academy) and tie the game
* Using the international tiebreaker rule, Sierra Williams (Grove City, PA/Lakeview) was placed on second to start the top of the eighth
* Maria Jones (Wilcox, PA/Johnsonburg) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on an error to score Williams
* Behrend got another run with another error, getting Jones home for a 3-1 lead
* The Mavericks scored three runs on three hits in the eighth, including a double down left-field line to score the final two runs and the game winner
* Nadia Bongiorni (Avella, PA/Avella) and Jocelyn McNany (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) had two hits apiece
* Ashleigh Schmidt (Sarver, PA/Freeport) had a season-best 11 strikeouts in the loss, going the distance and reaching 100 strikeouts for her career

Game Two: Medaille 3, Penn State Behrend 2
Records: Penn State Behrend (10-11, 4-2 AMCC), Medaille (13-8, 3-1 AMCC) 

Noteworthy: 

* Salvini kept the hitting hot in game two, going 3-for-3 with another triple and a double for the Lions
* Jones and Cami McNany (Emlenton, PA/Allegheny-Clarion Valley) each had two hits
* Medaille took the lead for good after the second inning
* The Mavericks scored a run in the first, second and fourth inning
* After a scoreless first inning, Salvin tripled to lead off the second and scored on a single by Williams
* Down 3-1, Behrend attempted another comeback with two straight hits to start the seventh
* McNany drove in Amy Nolte (Imperial, PA/West Allegheny) to make it 3-2 but the Lions did not get any more runs across the plate for the one-run final
* Kayla Lindberg (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) fell in the circle, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out five
