WBB: Wildcats Win Home Opener 59-46 Over Medaille.

MARCY, N.Y. -  The SUNY Poly women's basketball team won their home opener over the Medaille College Mavericks 59-46. It was the Wildcat's first game back in the Campus Center Gym in 631 days. SUNY Poly's record improves to 3-1 on the year with the non-conference win.

 

TURNING POINT: 

The turning point of the game was an impressive 22-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters of the game. With 5:02 remaining in the first, the Wildcats trailed 13-6. Over the next 10 minutes of play, tenacious SUNY Poly defense kept the Mavericks off the board while their offensive attack scored 22 unanswered points. The Mavericks broke their scoreless streak with 4:58 left in the second quarter on a two-point jumper. The Wildcats would continue to grow their lead into the third quarter where it hit a game-high 21 points. 

 

NOTABLE STATISTICS:

  • The Wildcats led in three big team statistics. They shot a higher percentage from the field (38.9% - 30.8%), Pulled down more rebounds (40 - 27), and had fewer turnovers (18 - 20). 

  • Molly Burdick had her third double-double of the season. She scored 14 points and had a game-high 18 rebounds. The junior also had a game-high and season-high seven assists for the Wildcats.

  • Kierra Connor had a game-high 15 points for SUNY Poly. She also had a game-high two blocks and four rebounds. 

  • Sophie Wittenbeck had 11 points for the Wildcats and hit a team-high three 3-pointers. 

  • Lauren Denny scored seven points for the 'Cats and dished out five assists. Denny also had three steals and three rebounds. 

  • Alexandra DeBeatham had a game-high four steals for the Wildcats. She also had eight points, three rebounds, and an assist. 

  • Ariea Garrett had a team-high 13 points for the Mavericks in 20 points off the bench. 

  • Shyanne Trinh had nine points, a rebound, and an assist for Medaille. 

  • Janelle Steed had nine points and three assists for Medaille. 

 

UP NEXT: 

The Wildcats will travel across town to take on local rival Utica College on Tuesday, November 30th. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
