CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Hilbert College men's lacrosse team found themselves down early and slipped further behind in the 3rd quarter before falling to Cazenovia College, 17-7, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference road game.
Cazenovia improved to 3-1 in league action while the Hawks dropped to 2-2.
Edward Mathias led  with four points, scoring three goals off 12 shots and
Elijah Ryan collected 11 saves for the Hawks.
Cazenovia held a 28-25 advantage in shots on goal and forced Hilbert into 12 more turnovers than what the Wildcats were credited for (12). Â The Hawks converted just over 50% of their clears and fell behind by 15 ground balls.
Marc O'Neill,
Ryan Spath and
Joshua Maloney (9-21 in face offs) led the Royal and White with three ground balls.
Spath notched two goals,
Drew Werner, and
Daniel Flynn each added a solo hits and
James Duffy led with three assists.
The Wildcats built an 8-2 lead after the first quarter and maintained that spread after matching the Hawks, 1-1, in the second period. Â Cazenovia stretched their advantage by five goals in the 3rd (6-1) as Hilbert outworked the hosts in the final 15 (3-2).
