La Roche Baseball goes 1-1, LeMaster Allowing One Run on Nine Hits

PITTSBURGH, PA - The La Roche baseball team took on conference competitor the Penn State-Altoona Lions. On a warm and sunny day (unheard of in Pittsburgh) the Redhawks were able to go 1-1 with the Lions.

Game One

In the first game of the double header the Redhawks struggled to gel together defensively.

La Roche put the first run on the board; Christian Melendez grounding out to second place gave Kyle Wietzel the opportunity to cross home plate.

The team was also able to score another run in the bottom of the second inning, Josh Dryer scoring on an error from the right fielder.

Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worst for La Roche. The Lions were able to catch up, and pull away for good with the two runs scored in the fourth inning.

Altoona scored seven runs in the sixth inning, solidifying their lead.

The Redhawks attempted to rally during their at bat in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to tie, or to take back the lead.

Shane Murphy took the loss for La Roche University . The righthander allowed eight hits and eight runs over five innings, striking out one.

Kyle Weitzel led the Redhawks with two hits in two at bats, coupled with two RBIs.

Also getting hits on the board tonight was Zach Kieb, Dylan Kurcon, Mason Brooks, Ryan Lynn, and Josh Dryer.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader was a much stronger outing for the Redhawks.

La Roche was again the first to cross home plate when Nathan Stutz singled on an 0-1 count to push Kyle Weitzel to score.

The team did all the rest of the score of the nine inning game in the third inning, scoring four runs.

La Roche University racked up 11 hits on the day. Kobal, Mason Brooks, and Stutz each had multiple hits for La Roche University . Kobal went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead La Roche University in hits.

Garret LeMaster recorded the win for today's contest. The freshman was solid for eight innings, allowing one run on nine hits, striking out seven and walking only one.

Shawn Marcellus came out of the bullpen in the top of the ninth inning to relieve the righty. Marcellus recorded the final three outs of the contest, and earned the save.

Pitt-Bradford is next up on the docket for the Redhawks on Easter weekend. The two will face off on Saturday with game times set 1:00 and 3:30 in the afternoon.
