BUFFALO, N.Y. – Rachel Allen reached double digits in strike outs and helped lift Hilbert to a 3-2 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over D'Youville College at Dobson Field this afternoon.
The second game of the Buffalo Cup double header was postponed due to the league's cold weather policy.
Gabriella Bongiorno went 2-for-3, scored one run and knocked in an RBI while
Morgan McNeill's one hit scored both runners to give Hilbert the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Rachel Allen improved to 6-5 after a 10-strikeout, five-hit effort with her 11th complete game inside the circle.
The Hawks had runners in position to score at the bottom of the 2nd, but
Hallie Barone's deep hit to center field turned into a double play as the Spartans throw to home beat
Morgan Grosch to the plate.
Allen opened the top of the 3rd with two consecutive strikeouts, but the Spartans responded with back-to-back hits and built a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks went scoreless through the next three innings until the bottom of the 6th.
Maia Delaney singled to right field and moved to third base off the next two Hilbert outs. Bongiorno's doubled to left field pushed Delaney home for the first Hawks run.
Morgan Grosch (2-for-2) singled through the left side and then advanced to second trailing Bongiorno by one bag. They both scored off McNeill's single setting the final score of the game at 3-2.
The second game of the double header will have to be made up at a later date.
Hilbert improves to 9-10 and 3-4 in the league. In a crazy stat, Penn State Behrend has played 12 AMCC games (9-3) while Hilbert and La Roche (5-2) are the only other two teams to have played more than six conference games.
The Hawks are scheduled to play at Franciscan this weekend. The Barons (8-8, 2-4) will host the double header beginning at 1pm April 21.
