HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Hilbert College men's volleyball team made strides in their performance against Juniata College, the number one ranked team in Division III today. The Hawks fell in three sets, but after a shaky start, they rebounded and stood steady on their side of the net.
Juniata out hit the Hawks finishing with 27 team kills, but didn't dominate the net (0.233). Hilbert, understandably so, was nervous to face the top team in their first road game of the year. The Hawks ended with a negative hitting percentage (-0.114) but collected 19 team kills.
Korey Schwab led the Hawks with five kills and
Bryce Perry trailed by one to finish with four.
Andrew Wolbert and
Tanner Makowski each tallied three kills while Adam Hefkta picked up two.
Brett Kane and
David Mellerski gave Hilbert one point each at the net.
Brett Kane quarterbacked the team with 14 assists and earned the Hawks' only service ace.
Adam Heftka set-up three kills while
Bryce Perry and
Ryan Ratajczak pushed the ball for one assist each.
Ryan Ratajczak was credited with eight digs and
Bryce Perry followed with five. Four other players chipped in three digs each for a team total of 27.
Juniata covered the net well defensively and finished with one solo block and six assisted blocks.
Adam Heftka earned Hilbert's only solo block and joined Kane and Perry with an assisted block. Both
Korey Schwab and Wolbert picked up two assisted blocks each.
While Juniata gave Hilbert six points on service errors, Hilbert more than doubled that gift and gave the ball back to the hosts after getting whistled for 12 service errors.
Juniata opened the day with a 25-8 victory. Hilbert improved with a better hitting set but still fell, 25-13. And in the final set of the match, Hilbert secured a positive hitting percentage but still dropped a 25-18 set.
Hilbert returns to action tomorrow, January 24 at 9 am when they meet up with Thiel College.
