Lions Split Friday Matches; Peterman Secures 100th Win

AURORA, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona men's volleyball went 1-1 in two non-conference matches on Friday evening at Wells College, losing 3-0 to No. 6 Wells before bouncing back for a 3-0 sweep of SUNY Potsdam in the Schwartz Athletic Center.

With the Lions' win over SUNY Potsdam, Penn State Altoona head coach Phil Peterman recorded his 100th career win with the men's volleyball program. Peterman is in his eighth year at the helm of the team, since overseeing the program's transition from club to varsity status, beginning with the 2013 season.

Match One: Wells 3, Penn State Altoona 0

Wells, which entered the match tied for the No. 6 spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Top 15 poll, defeated Penn State Altoona in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-14, and 25-23.

Tyler Sheaffer (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) posted team-highs with 10 assists and five kills, and he tied for the team lead with four total blocks, accumulating three solo blocks and one block assist. Daniel Jordan (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) also had four total blocks, recording three solos and one assist, and Frank Perehinec (Altoona, PA/Altoona) finished with three solo blocks, four kills, and three digs.

Ben Beaver (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) had three kills, three assists, and four digs. Nathaniel Reinert (State College, PA/State College) posted three digs, one solo block, one block assist, and one kill. Mirko Pandini (Milan, Italy/Greater Latrobe) totaled one kill, one solo block, and one block assist, and Nikolas Ferraro (Toms River, NJ/Donovan Catholic) added one solo block.

Matthew Vandeveire (Washington, D.C./West Springfield) totaled a team-best 10 digs.

Match Two: Penn State Altoona 3, SUNY Potsdam 0

The Lions rebounded from a loss in their first match of the night with a commanding 25-12, 25-9, 25-23 victory over SUNY Potsdam for Peterman's 100th career win.

Perehinec led Penn State Altoona in kills with nine, posting a .667 hitting percentage. Ferraro finished with five kills and a team-high four total blocks, accumulating two solo blocks and two block assists. Beaver also had five kills to go along with four assists, three digs, and two block assists.

Abel Gebre (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) finished with five kills and tied for the team-high in digs with seven. Alistair Lawson (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) added four kills and four digs, Pandini had three kills, two block assists, and one solo block, and Jordan recorded three kills and two block assists.

Sheaffer put up a team-high 14 assists, and he also had six digs, two kills, and two block assists. Matthew Faust (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) recorded 12 assists and one block assist. Eric Cassaday (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) posted a team-high two service aces to go along with three digs and one kill.

Micah Brinker (Lock Haven, PA/PA Cyber) tied for the team lead in digs with seven, and Vandeveire tallied five digs. Reinert chipped in one block assist.

With a total of nine blocks as a team, the Lions tied for the ninth-most blocks in a three-set match in program history.

The Penn State Altoona men's volleyball team wraps up its weekend at Wells tomorrow, Saturday, February 15 with a match at 1:00 p.m. against Division II opponent Daemen College.
