Baseball starts Florida trip with two big wins over No. 11 La Roche

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Kevin Elwell turned in yet another superb outing in game one and the Elizabethtown offense put up six runs early in game two to sweep 11th-ranked La Roche 1-0 and 6-4 Sunday at the Lawnwood Complex in Fort Pierce, Fla.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 1, La Roche 0 (F/8)

Brian Portillo's walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth made a winner out of senior ace Kevin Elwell for the 20th time in his career.

Portillo provided the only run of the game in a pitchers dual that saw the Blue Jays and Redhawks combine for just nine hits. La Roche's Nick Tunstall took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and struck out six before turning the game over to Trey Claar.

Elizabethtown started to make some noise in the sixth, first against Tunstall and then Claar. Colby Smith was hit by a pitch with one out and Mike Christy singled to left to put a pair on for Nick Lorenz. The senior from McAlisterville backed up Christy's single with one of his own, but Smith got caught in no man's land rounding third and was thrown out to end the inning.

Elwell quickly disposed of the Redhawks in the seventh and worked around a pair of singles in the eighth. Portillo's game-winning hit in the eighth earned Elwell his 20th career victory and sixth career shutout.

Elwell is only the sixth pitcher in program history to reach that milestone and first since Sam Heaps in 2009. The righty from Clarks Summit improved to 2-0 this season with a 1.20 earned run average over 15 innings. He allowed six hits --all singles from La Roche's 1-2-3 hitters-- and struck out five.

GAME 2
Elizabethtown 6, La Roche 4

Elizabethtown got to Redhawks' starter Tre Thomas for six runs in the first three innings and held on for a gritty 6-4 win to complete the sweep.

Smith put the Blue Jays (4-1) ahead in their first at-bats, driving home Kyle Fackler and Richy Masciarelli on a single to left. Fackler did his own damage an inning later, with a two-out double plating Anthony Cameron and Riley McGinley for a 4-0 lead.

The Blue Jays weren't done scoring. In the third, Lorenz brought home Smith with a single and Portillo raced in from second ahead of throw from first baseman David Lemley as the lead widened to 6-0.

Those six runs proved to be enough for junior Anthony Lippy and two relievers.

Lippy went four innings and struck out four for his first win of the season. Andrew Brndjar bridged the gap to Josh Kwak with 1.1 scoreless innings and Kwak struck out one during a five-out save, the first save of his career.

Fackler and Portillo each had two hits for the Jays and McGinley's one-out single in the top of the second was the first of his career.

La Roche (2-4) outhit E-town 11-8 in game two, but could never come up with the offense at timely junctions. Back within 6-4 at the end of the fifth, the Redhawks never got a runner past second the rest of the way.
