Women's Soccer Earns 3-2 Win Over Medaille

BUFFALO, N.Y.  – The Hilbert Women's Soccer team earned their second win in a row, beating Medaille University 3-2 tonight at the Buffalo Color Park Sports Complex on Elk Street.

The Hawks responded to last fall's 3-2 overtime loss to the Mavs and after tonight's victory, evened their series record at 3-3 over the last six seasons.

Grace Zabawa netted twice and Gabrielle Avallone earned three points after assisting on Zabawa's first hit of the night.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Hilbert 3  |  Medaille 2
  • Location:  Color Park  | Elk Street, Buffalo
  • Records:   Hilbert 2-1-2  I  Medaille 0-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks dominated play and set the pace in the first half action, attempting 17 shots and working for four corners.  Hilbert took two shots on goal in the first three minutes of the game – one ended in a save and the other was blocked and led to a corner.
  • But Medaille's game-opening shot sailed to the upper left of the goal and put the Mavs on the scoreboard at 4:23.
  • The Hawks elevated their efforts and scored back-to-back hits which gave them a 2-1 lead heading into intermission.
  • Grace Zabawa's head finished a Gabrielle Avallone feed off a corner kick at 19:28, and Avallone placed her goal shot in the upper right corner about twenty minutes later.
  • Hilbert attempted seven shots at the start of the second half before Zabawa scored her second of the night in the 62nd minute lifting the Hawks to a 3-1 lead.
  • The Mavs responded 45-seconds later sending a loose ball to the back of the net which was sent to the box off a corner kick.
  • Goalie Hailey Kuder made a great heads-up play, leaving her 'home base' and rushing outside the 40 yard box to challenge a 'one-v-her' break away within a minute after Medaille sliced the margin to one.
  • Hilbert continued to set the tone in the match offensively.  The Hawks outshot the Mavs 17-6 in the second half and Hilbert's back line continued to poke and defend, winning battles on the ground.
GAME NOTES
  • By the final horn, Hilbert built a 34-14 advantage in shots, 14-9 on goal.
  • Tahlia Kosek earned her first W in goal after making four saves in the first half.  Hailey Kuder closed the contest with three saves and few broken-up crossing plays in the box.
  • Macy Kisner (10) and Gabrielle Avallone (9) kept the Mav's goalie on her toes as they looked to the frame as many times as possible.
