Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nehemiah Kornegay Has a Career Day In Hawks Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa - The Hilbert College men's basketball team keeps rolling. They continue to find ways to win this season with different guys stepping up when their team needs them.

Nehemiah Kornegay came off the bench to lead the Hawks in a 91-77 road win against La Roche College this afternoon. Kornegay surprised the RedHawks with 28 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes of action.

The game started as expected with each team trading hoops the first eight minutes setting up a 9-9 score. Hilbert then went cold from the floor and La Roche added 21 points to build a 28-17 lead at 7:49.

The Hawks made their comeback run with just over three minutes in the first half and rallied from a 38-27 deficit to a 40-39 half time score. Ryan Bradt started the run with an old-fashioned three-point play and Jalen Smith returned to action with a strike from beyond the arc with 18-seconds on the clock.

Kornegay and Bradt carried the Hawks with 11 first-half points thanks to a combined 9-11 shooting from the floor and 4-4 at the foul line.

The second half was a repeat performance as the start of the game. Neither team grabbed a larger than 6-point lead until the Hawks broke-it open with just over six minutes remaining.

Sean Weisansal hit for six quick-points and Jerame Owens hit a layup at 6:08 to give Hilbert their largest lead 71-63.

Owens then came up big on the defensive end with a blocked shot which Kornegay tossed to the streaking David Arlaud for a fast break score to give the Hawks' their first double-digit lead ten seconds later.

The Hawks went 13-16 at the charity stripe to close the game strong from the foul line.

Weisansal posted 21 points (9-of-12 from the floor) and added three assists, and a pair of blocks / steals. Owens collected 10 points after early foul trouble in the first half limited his minutes. The senior also added three blocks and picked-up two more steals. Smith returned to action this afternoon and chipped in 10 points, one less than Bradt's 11 markers.

Kornegay went 12-14 from the foul line and added a pair of steals.

The Hawks shot 48.5% from the floor but only hit 2-for-8 from down town. They went 23-27 at the foul line and grabbed 36 rebounds.

Hilbert limited La Roche to 46.9% shooting, but gave up nine three-point shots and 31 rebounds.

After passing today's big test, Hilbert is still under the gun the rest of the season. They have three games remaining as the post-season rankings are still up in the air.

The Hawks host Pitt-Greensburg next Saturday, Penn St. Behrend the following Wednesday (17th) and then travel to Penn State Altoona Feb 20 to close the regular season. Hilbert is currently in a two-way tie with Greensburg in second place, as both teams have three AMCC losses. {Greensburg plays Medaille tonight at 6pm}. Behrend (13-1) sits at top in the league, but still has to play both Hilbert and Greensburg before the end of the season. And Penn State Altoona is a game the Hawks wish they could take back, as the Lions grabbed an unexpected 67-66 road win in Hamburg.
