HAMBURG, N.Y. – After playing to a 1-0 half time deficit, the Hilbert College men's soccer team surrendered four unanswered goals in the second period to fall 5-0 to Penn State Behrend.
The Lions (10-1-3) sit in a 2-way tie with Medaille for second place in the AMCC with a 4-0-1 record and they trail undefeated Franciscan (6-0). Behrend was listed at #8 in the Great Lakes Region of the NSCAA national soccer poll going down in only one defeat this year.
Ryan Valentine was on his toes from the start of the game and he finished with 12 saves. At least one per half was point-blank, quick reaction time stops.
Hilbert was credited with seven shots, three on goal.
Garrett Rehner,
Brandon Ciesielski and
Ryan Schupp were able to fire at the visiting goalie, but he scooped all three shots in for saves.
Behrend finished the match with 27 shots and 13 corner kicks. The Lions converted twice from the corner, both times heading the ball to the back of the net.
Today's match was the final home game for the 11 seniors who the program just celebrated on Saturday. The Hawks (2-9-1) will close their season with four contests on the road. They travel to Mt. Aloysius this weekend, then return to Buffalo for a night game at D'Youville College (Oct 19); Hilbert goes to Pitt-Greensburg Oct 22 and then finishes the 2016 at Alfred State College Oct 25 in another night game.
