Men’s Soccer Hangs on for 2-1 Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's soccer outlasted Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche University on Tuesday night, when the Lions picked up a 2-1 victory at Spring Run Stadium.

Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season for Penn State Altoona (9-4- 3-2 AMCC), and that proved to be enough offense for the Lions to secure the win. Tommy Packevicz (Trumbull, CT/Christian Heritage) made one save in goal to record his ninth victory of the fall.

Penn State Altoona grabbed an early lead when Corr was awarded a penalty shot at 16:46. He converted on the attempt, sending a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Lions on the board.

Corr took advantage of another scoring opportunity early in the second half to add another goal  to his team's total. After Cameron McCarthy (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) hit the right goal post with a shot, the ball deflected out to the top of the box, where Corr took it and fired a hard shot past the keeper from 18 yards out to make it 2-1 at the 47:57 mark.

La Roche (1-8, 1-3 AMCC) cut into the Lions' lead in the 90th minute. Ryan Truax passed the ball into the box for Jake Gorman, who chipped a 10-yard shot past the keeper at 89:08 to narrow the Redhawks' deficit to 2-1.

But it was too little, too late for La Roche, as Penn State Altoona held on to clinch the one-goal AMCC win.

The Lions finished with a big 25-10 advantage over La Roche in shot attempts, as well as a 4-2 lead in shots on goal. The home team also led 6-2 in corner kicks.

Corr led all players in the game with 11 shot attempts and three shots on goal, and his total of 11 shots attempted is tied for the third-most in a game in Penn State Altoona men's soccer history. McCarthy attempted five shots, and Garrett Giedroc (Howard, PA/Bald Eagle) took four shots. Damian Dangler (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) recorded three shot attempts with one shot on goal, and Bailey Musselman (Altoona, PA/Altoona) attempted a pair of shots.

Penn State Altoona men's soccer's next game is on the road this Saturday, October 16, when the Lions travel to face AMCC foe Pitt-Bradford at 3:15 p.m.
