CSB splits two games to wrap up Florida trip

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team split a pair of games Saturday morning to wrap up its Florida trip. The team lost 4-3 to Ohio Northern in its first game of the day before coming back to beat Penn State-Behrend 5-1 to end the week.

CSB wraps up its week in Florida with a 9-3 record. Saint Benedict is now 10-4 overall heading into a short break before its next scheduled games.

In the second game of the day, first year Mo Burns hit her first collegiate home run to get CSB on the board in the top of the first inning. Saint Benedict held onto that 1-0 lead until the fifth when it added a trio of runs that eventually proved to be the difference in the game. Jordyn Swoboda came in to pinch hit and doubled, and Sheridan Glashan – also pinch hitting – followed that with a two-run homer, and Kate Deming reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Claire Boatman.

CSB added a single run in the seventh on an RBI single from Burns, and PSU scored its lone run on a solo homer in the bottom of the innings.

First year pitcher Lauren York picked up her first collegiate win on the mound against Behrend. She threw all seven innings and gave up one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Burns had two hits and two RBIs to lead CSB, which had eight total hits.

In CSB's first game of the day it was Ohio Northern that jumped to an early lead. The first two batters of the game singled and came around to score on a three-run homer to put ONU up 3-0 early. Madison Mikolich singled and scored on an RBI sac fly from Deming to make it 3-1 after three, but the Bears added one more run in the fifth after a trio of singles.

CSB rallied in the bottom of the seventh and got runners on when Glashan singled and Emilie Antony reached on an error. Glashan scored on a double from Mikolich and Antony came in on an RBI sac fly from Olivia McCabe, but Mikolich was stranded at third and ONU held on for the win.

Mikolich finished with two hits to pace CSB, which had six hits to ONU's eight. Alex Smith took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts, and York struck out one in the final two innings.

CSB is off now until Saturday, March 23, when it is scheduled to take on Buena Vista in a nonconference doubleheader in Storm Lake, Iowa. The team's home and MIAC opener is scheduled for March 30 against Macalester.
