Shaw Hits Hawks First Home Run in Hilbert's Loss

BRADFORD, Pa. – Picking up where they left off on Wednesday last week, the Hilbert College baseball team returned to Pitt-Bradford to close the two-game series with the Panthers this afternoon.

After falling behind early, the Hawks' sixth inning rally was short lived, as they fell 11-8 in the 9-inning game.  Bradford took the double header sweep to improve to 2-0 while Hilbert slipped to 0-2 to start AMCC play.

Tyler Shaw knocked in Hilbert's first home run of the season and picked the Hawks up with three instant runs in the 6th inning.

Anthony Wurstner and Chris Shriver each went 3 for 5 with Shriver driving in two runs off his single in the 8th inning.

Hilbert gave up five runs over the course of four innings before a score-less fifth inning.  When the Hawks swung their bats in the sixth, Hilbert put together six runs, to take a 6-5 lead over the Panthers.

Ryan Bonafede got on base with a walk and moved to second off a Chris Shriver single.  Kevin Moore's double to left knocked in Hilbert's first run.   After a quick pitching change by Bradford, Tyler Shaw poked one over left field fence for his 3 RBI trot.  Another pitching change and Dalton Reynolds took a bag after getting hit by pitch.  After stealing second, Reynolds was tagged out at 3rd on fielder's choice.

Paul Wujek earned an RBI single and forced a third pitching change in the inning.  A few wild pitches later and the Hawks rotated around the bags to pick up their sixth run of the inning.

Bradford responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead, 11-6.

Shriver's single in the 8th sent in two more runs home but the Hawks ran out of hits as the game progressed into the 9th.

Anthony Wurstner connected for a double bagger and Wujek, Moore and Reynolds each successfully stole a base to give Hilbert some offensive.

Justin Hulbert opened the game on the mound and traveled 3.2 innings before Sal Carroccia covered 2.0 leaving the mound in the bottom of the 6th, taking the loss.  Justin Crawley struck four out, as did Hulbert, before Logan Parachoniak finished the game in the 8th.

Hilbert had their April 8, AMCC double header against Medaille postponed as each team's home field isn't ready to host a collegiate game yet.

The Hawks are scheduled to host Alfred State April 11 and Mount Aloysius April 12.

Neither game will be played in Hamburg.

The A-State game will be played in the Alfred area and it's location will be announced shortly.  The Mount Aloysius game is set for Sunday in Olean at St. Bonaventure's turfed field on campus.
