BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Hilbert College softball team hosted their first
home double header at D'Youville College's new turf multisport complex on March 25. The Hawks suffered a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference losses to Medaille College on a wet and windy afternoon.
Rachel Collier led the Hawks going 2 for 3 picking up one of the team's five RBI's over the course of the two games.
Phoenix Rollek also finished with two hits and scored twice for the 0-2 AMCC Hawks.
Hilbert opened the day with four hits in their 18-4 loss.
Jaelyn Gotham took the loss in the dirt circle on the fully turfed field in the lower Westside of Buffalo near the Peace Bridge into Canada.
Victoria Dzaak closed the last 3.2 innings and between the two, Hilbert was credited with three strike outs while giving up six earned runs.
Collier's single down the left field line drove in Rollek in the first inning which gave Hilbert their only lead of the day. Medaille responded with six runs in both the top of the second and third innings while holding Hilbert score-less. The Mavericks added two more markers in the top of the fourth prior to Hilbert answering back with three runs of their own.
Chelsea Buono singled to center and sent
TylerLynn Langer home before the Hawks benefitted from back-to-back bases loaded base-on-balls.
Medaille scored four more times before the final out in the bottom of the 5th inning.
The second game started off on the wrong foot for Hilbert. With a 2-2 count, the Maverick's first batter whacked a long ball over the right field fence and took a 1-0 lead before the second batter faced
TylerLynn Langer in the circle. Medaille put 11 runs on the scoreboard by the final out in the top of first inning.
After
Phoenix Rollek's single got her on base, she made it to third before Langer sent her home for the Hawks solo run of the inning.
Over the course of the next three innings, Hilbert scored twice but gave up 10 runs and committed two more errors in the field. Medaille poked another ball over the fence collecting three instant runs in the third inning.
Jenna Castricone earned a double bagger and moved to third base ahead of the throw. Her stay on third was brief thanks to Langer's at bat which gave Catricone time to sprint home.
Lindsay O'Neil earned a walk and advanced home ahead of the throw from Medaille centerfielder after
Taylor Smith picked up a double.
Things unraveled for Hilbert in the top of the 5th inning. After the Hawks committed five fielding errors in a row, Medaille extended their lead by nine more runs to take a 30-3 victory.
Hilbert returns to AMCC play this weekend when they travel to Penn State Altoona for a Sunday, March 29 double header beginning at 1pm.
