Rogers & Proy's Double-Double Helps Hawks to Season Opening Victory

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team pulled out their first victory of the season tonight winning their opener 77-65 over Elmira College.

Four different Hawks posted double-digit points with Shannon Rogers and Katelyn Proy earning their first double-double of the season.

Hilbert jumped ahead 21-18 after the first quarter and extended their lead to 36-30 by intermission.  Elmira came back and won the third quarter by one point (15-14) before the Hawks exploded for 27 4th quarter points, taking a 77-65 victory.

Shannon Rogers hit 6 of 8 from the floor, went 5 of 6 at the foul line (17 points), and pulled down 10 rebounds (9 defensive) while dishing four assists and grabbing a pair of steals.  Her partner in the paint, Katelyn Proy earned all 12 points inside the key while grabbing four offensive rebounds (10 for the game).

Kelsi Ebert (15 points) hit just north of 50% of her shots and added three assists and Emily Gawlak matched her efforts with six buckets from the floor.

Crystle Marion, Taylor Corts, Samantha Heiler and Emily Speidel each found the bottom of the net from downtown which lifted Hilbert to victory.

Hilbert pulled down 11 more rebounds but committed nine more turnovers in the win.  But it was the Hawks' deeper bench that turned into the difference maker.

Hilbert was whistled for 27 team fouls in a tightly called game; seven different Hawks were tagged with three of more fouls in the 40 minute contest. Elmira benefited from the freebies from 15 feet, hitting 75% of their 32 attempts.

Hilbert's coaching staff and players are excited for their upcoming trip to North Carolina this weekend.  The Hawks (1-0) are traveling to William Peace University for the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament November 18 and 19 down in Raleigh.  The Hawks will battle Huntingdon College at 6pm Friday and face either Berry College or the hosts on Saturday.
