Women’s Tennis Blanks Pitt-Bradford 9-0

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's tennis team hit the road to grab its second win of the season on Friday night, when the Lions swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford 9-0.

Penn State Altoona (2-5, 2-2 AMCC) got off to a strong start with a trio of convincing wins in doubles play. In the No. 1 doubles match, the duo of Mikhaela Merca (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin)/Rachel Stricek (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) handled their opponents by a score of 8-1 to pick up their third doubles win of the season together. In the No. 2 match, Lydia Um (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg)/Lauren Stich (Ellwood City, PA/Lincoln) teamed up for their first collegiate doubles victory with an 8-0 win. In No. 3 doubles, Isabella Rhoades (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone)/Stephanie Swain (Yadkin County, NC/Forbush) prevailed 8-2 for their team-high fourth doubles win together.

The Lions went on to win all six singles matches over Pitt-Bradford (1-6, 0-3 AMCC) to clinch the match sweep. Merca recorded her team-leading third singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 match, and Stricek followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 match for her second win of the year. Um nabbed her first collegiate singles win in the No. 3 slot, where she triumphed 6-0, 6-1 over her opponent. Swain also won by a score of 6-0, 6-1, claiming victory in the No. 4 spot for her second singles win of the season, and Rhoades secured a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 5 match for her second singles victory.

Pitt-Bradford forfeited the No. 6 singles match to account for Penn State Altoona's ninth point.

Next up, Penn State Altoona women's tennis will play its final regular season AMCC match this Sunday, October 2, when the Lions will travel to face nearby conference rival Mount Aloysius College for a 12:00 p.m. match at the Ebensburg Tennis Center.
