CLERMONT, Fla. – Penn State Altoona softball was handed a pair of losses on Tuesday afternoon in The Spring Games, being edged 2-1 by Delaware Valley University before suffering a 16-4 defeat at the hands of Marietta College at Hancock Park.

Penn State Altoona (1-4) was locked in a tight battle in its first game of the day before losing on a walkoff, and the Lions were overpowered in a run rule-shortened game two.

Game One: Delaware Valley 2, Penn State Altoona 1

Casey Reese (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but Delaware Valley (2-2) broke it up and eventually won on a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh.

Reese pitched a complete game, going six innings and allowing just one earned run and two hits while striking out six batters.

Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett), Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central), Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola), Olivia Smith (Martinsburg, PA/Central), and Reese each had one hit for the Lions.

Penn State Altoona scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning. Colledge led off the frame with a base hit to center, moved up to second on Reese's sacrifice bunt, and then scored on Smith's RBI double to left.

Delaware Valley answered with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the score. Sierra Ripka started the inning by drawing a walk, then stole second base to move into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt advanced Ripka to third, and a throw to second on a steal attempt allowed Ripka to score from third.

Reese kept Delaware Valley out of the hit column until the sixth, when Adina Brucie's bunt single with one out broke up the no-no.

Delaware Valley ultimately prevailed on a walkoff error in the bottom of the seventh. Olivia Monismith walked, then scored on a throwing error following Emily Merrigan's base hit to give her team a victory.

Game Two: Marietta 16, Penn State Altoona 4 (Final/5 innings)

Marietta (2-4) plated 16 runs on 13 hits to defeat Penn State Altoona in five innings. The Lions were limited to four runs on just three hits.

Feathers, Jayde Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola), and Brooke Boonie (Petersburg, PA/Juniata Valley) collected hits for Penn State Altoona. Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) started in the circle and pitched 1 1/3 innings, and Makenzie Lukehart (Utahville, PA/Glendale) tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief.

Marietta scored the game's first run in the top of the first, then put six more runs on the board in the second.

Penn State Altoona picked up three runs in the second inning. Feathers led off the frame with a double and eventually scored on a passed ball, while Burge drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. Katie College (Davidsville, PA/Conemaugh Township) scored on an error to bring Penn State Altoona to within four, 7-3.

But Marietta plated nine more runs over the next three innings to establish a commanding 16-3 lead.

The Lions picked up the game's last run in the bottom of the fifth, when Burge's RBI single scored Boonie. But the contest ended at the conclusion of the fifth via the eight-run rule.

Penn State Altoona softball is back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9 with games against Bethany Lutheran College and Gordon College at Hancock Park. Game one is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
