Softball Sweeps Bradford, Breaks 26-Game Losing Streak

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Hilbert College softball team broke a 26-game losing streak when they grabbed a 2-1 victory at Pitt-Bradford this afternoon.  The Hawks then turned around and swept the series with a 5-0 nightcap win.

The Hawks, who have never beaten the Panthers since Hilbert joined the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in 2005, also picked up their first AMCC wins of the 2018 season improving to 2-4 and 8-10 overall.

Rachel Allen collected two wins going the distance in both league games while giving up a total of eight hits and striking out seven through 14-innings of work.

Maia Delaney went 4-for-4 with 3RBIs in the nightcap and finished one homerun shy of hitting the cycle.

GAME ONE

Nateal Papasergi made it home after Melanie Basile's RBI single reached center field in the top of the 7th.

With two outs in the bottom of the 7th, Bradford reached the left field with a ball hit up the left side and had a chance to win it, but Prenoveau made a beautiful diving catch at second to end the game.

Both teams scored solo runs in the fourth, which set up the dramatic finish in the seventh.  Gabriella Bongiorno doubled to right center and knocked in Morgan McNeill for Hilbert's first run of the day.

Rachel Allen improved to 4-5 after fanning four and giving up four hits.

GAME TWO

With two outs in the 3rd inning, Maia Delaney tripled and Jenna Castricone's RBI single up the middle pushed her home for the 1st run in the nightcap.

Then again with two a pair of outs in the 5th, Delaney's single scored Alyssa Barnas who also earned a hit as the second batter in the inning.

It remained a 2-0 score until the top of the 7th when the Hawks posted three more runs.

Basile and Barnas each singled before Johnson reached on a fielder's choice which scored Basile.  Delaney closed the day with a 2RBI double setting the score at 5-0.

Bradford didn't go down easy as they earned three hits in the bottom of the 7th loading the bases with one out.  The Hawks secured back-to-back outs for the win.

Barnas went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.

With tomorrow's AMCC games against Penn State Altoona on hold, thanks to the forecasted freezing rain, the Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 17 when they host D'Youville College in a Buffalo Cup contest at the Spartans' Dobson's complex.
