Box Score 2 FT. PIERCE, Fl. – The Hilbert College baseball team opened their 2015 season under new leadership and took the night cap win (8-1) after letting the opening game slip away in the top of the 7th (4-3) to Bethany College (WV).
Justin Hulbert pitched a complete game while the Hawks used three different hurlers in the morning match.
Hilbert notched three runs in the top of the 1st and tacked one more on the in the 3rd inning. After Bethany found home plate in the fourth inning, Hilbert shut the door defensively and outscored them in the 5th and 7th innings for the win.
Daniel Christmann racked up four RBIs on four hits and scored one of the eight Hawks runs in the later afternoon victory.
Mark Anderson's 2 RBI single sent two runners home and
Anthony Wurstner and
Ryan Bonafede each earned an RBI in the victory.
Hulbert faced 25 batters and sent three back to the dug-out while giving up just three hits and no walks in the seven inning game.
Hilbert started the morning game in good shape. They recovered from a 1st inning Bethany run by connecting twice in the 4th inning thanks to
Joshua Maier and
Tyler Shaw's single RBIs.
A wild Hilbert pitch in the 5th inning forced a 2-2 tie.
Hilbert regained the lead after Shaw knocked home
Dalton Reynolds who entered the game as a pinch runner for
Sal Carroccia who walked to first.
But in the top of the 7th, Bethany singled twice to the outfield and pushed-in what turned out to be the winning run when the Hawks went 0-3 in the bottom of the inning.
Shaw went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and
Joshua Maier earned the other Hawk RBI after a 2 for 4 performance at the plate.
Tyler Roth opened the game going 4.1 innings and finished with four strike-outs while giving up four hits and two runs and two walks.
Tyler Wangler picked-up the pace for Hilbert and covered 1.2 innings facing six batters while walking only one and tossing one wild pitch.
Logan Parachoniak took the loss in the top of the 7th, giving up four hits, two runs with one strike out.
Hilbert returns to action Monday, March 9 with a double header against Marywood University.
