HAMBURG, N.Y. –
Joshua Maier poked his first Hilbert home run today, but his 7th inning grand slam dinger wasn't enough fuel to bring Hilbert back in the 12-7 opening game defeat to Medaille College.
The Hawks and Mavericks then battled to a nail biting 6-5 Hilbert defeat in the bottom of the 9th inning to close out senior day for
Daniel Christmann and
Matt Goraj.
Hilbert fell to eighth place in the AMCC with a 4-12 league record as Medaille improved to 6-10 and claimed the final spot while pushing Penn State Altoona (6-10) out of the race.
Hilbert's top six batters in the 1pm game produced all the offensive power being credited with all nine hits.
Ryan Bonafede connected on 2 of his 3 at bats with credit for a single RBI while
Daniel Christmann continued his hot streak going 2 for 4.
Joshua Maier had only one hit, but that was all it took to score four runs.
Maier earned his first RBI in a fielders choice in the 1st inning just after Bonafede's RBI single scored Christmann to give Hilbert a 2-1 lead early.
The Hawks got back on the board in the 5th when
Anthony Wurstner made contact with a single to left field sending
Bradley Perrin home for the third run of the afternoon.
Then, down 12-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Maier homered to left field cutting the difference to five runs with only one out. The rally fell short with two consecutive ground outs.
GAME TWO:
With bases loaded in the bottom of the second,
Bradley Perrin hit into a double-play but pushed
Ryan Bonafede home after his single got him on base at the start of the inning.
That 1-0 lead held strong until the hosts found two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bonafede took first base thanks to the hit by the pitch rule and when
Joshua Maier doubled to center field, Bonafede made it to third.
Kevin Moore hit a long out to center field allowing Bonafede to score his second run of the day. Perrin was credited with his second RBI in the game with a hit to left field.
Medaille found back to back doubles and a single which gave them three quick runs in the top of 5th to tie the score at 3 each. The Mavericks again doubled in the 6th to pick up two more runs.
That 5-3 lead held until
Anthony Wurstner knocked a two-run homer in the bottom of the 7th as Hilbert knotted the game again at 5-all.
The game ended in the bottom of the 9th when Medaille's catcher caught a Hilbert foul ball, high pop-up behind the plate after the Mavericks posted a run in the top half of the inning for the win.
Kevin Moore and
Bradley Perrin were the big hitters going 2 for 4. Perrin and Wurstner were credited with 2RBI each.
Justin Hulbert went 4.2 innings and fanned two batters in the opening game.
Sal Carroccia covered six innings taking the loss on the mound with five runs scored in the second game.
