Women's Basketball is Back to Back AMCC Tournament Champions

PITTSBURGH, PA - On Coach Scott Lang Court tonight, La Roche women's basketball won the AMCC Tournament for the NINTH TIME in school history.

The Redhawks stormed out to a 9-0 lead to get the game started, with four of those points coming from senior Shaundrea Butler. Butler continued to have one of her best games of the season with 15 points. The senior shot 50 percent from field goal range, and also was a big team player with three total assists on the night.

Butler led the Redhawks with six points in the first ten minutes. Pitt-Greensburg wasn't ready to back down, outscoring La Roche 23-20 in the second quarter, with Maietta scoring 11 second quarter points. The Redhawks took a 39-30 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Danajah Sanders captained the ship when the Redhawks came back out of the locker room. The junior had 19 points in tonight's championship game. She pushed the offense to outscore UPG in the third period 18-11, giving La Roche a 16 point lead.
When entering the fourth and final period, the La Roche defense buckled down. They forced the Bobcats to turnover sixteen times, and converted them into 16 points.

In the final period, Pitt-Greensburg outscored the Redhawks 18-15, but it was too late, LRU had taken their 16 point cushion and didn't let it dwindle.

In the end, with a final score of 72-59 La Roche was once again back to back AMCC Champions.

Named to the All Tournament team for the Redhawks was junior, Machia Hairston. Hairston in the championship game alone had a double double with 10 points and 20 rebounds. This was her highest rebounding game of her career at La Roche.

Also named to the All Tournament team was Ayanna Mazyck. Mazyck has been the driving force for the Redhawks into the tail end of their season and tonight was no different. The senior netted 12 points to finish out her career on Coach Scott Lang Court.

La Roche will be moving on to playing in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament; their opponent will be announced on Monday, at 2:30 PM.
