Hawks Dominate Franciscan in 27-6 Win

STEUBENVILLE, OH  – After opening the first quarter with 13 unanswered goals, the Hilbert College men's lacrosse team coasted to a 27-6 road win at Franciscan University this afternoon.

The Hawks improved to 5-5 and earned their second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory of the season.

Hilbert dominated play, doubling-up the Barons in shots (52-26) and shots on goal (36-15).

Edward Mathias' seven goals led ten other players in scoring for the Hawks.  In all, 15 of the team's 17 field players had a hand in scoring. 

Another impressive stat was that all four of the Hawks defenders were credited with an assist – Tyler Balsavage, Austin Good, Chase Harmon and Garrett Rehner

Mathias posted a team-high 11 points and Joshua Schindler added 8 points (5g).  James Duffy collected four assists (2g) and Marc O'Neill tossed in four goals (5p).

Franciscan turned the ball over 30 times and the Hawks were credited with 19 caused turnovers. 

Ryan Spath led the defensive charge with a career-high five caused turnovers and seven ground balls.  Garrett Rehner, besides posting an assist, earned his first career goal, scooped seven ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Joseph Stevenson improved to 5-4 and made six saves in 30 minutes of action.  Both Spencer Kennedy and Elijah Ryan (3s) shared the second half in the cage.

Hilbert slowed their pace in the second quarter but continued to outscore Francsican 3-1 as the Hawks took a 16-1 advantage to the bench for the half time break.

The Royal and White jumped out in the third quarter with another big advantage (9-2) only to have the Barons win the fourth quarter (3-2).

Hilbert has a few days to prepare for their next North Eastern Athletic Conference match which also is tagged as an AMCC game.  The Hawks will travel to Dobson Field for their road game against Medaille April 18 at 8pm.
