ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Cortland went 1-1 during the first day of the University of Rochester Invitational, sweeping Medaille before having a comeback come up just short versus the host Yellowjackets.
Cortland (3-3) defeated Medaille (1-5) by set scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-20.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) led the Red Dragons with 10 kills and no errors in 21 attempts for a .476 attack percentage. She also registered seven digs and two aces.
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) also posted an errorless attack line with six kills in 11 attempts for a .545 attack percentage.
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) finished with seven kills,
Carly Haegele (Commack) led the team with 11 digs, and
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) added four kills and three blocks.
Lindsay Howell led the Mavericks with six kills and no errors in 14 attempts.
Cortland dropped the first two sets to Rochester (4-2), both by 25-15 scores, but came back to win the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-23. The Yellowjackets, however, never trailed during a 15-8 win in the fifth set.
Southcott again paced Cortland with 13 kills and added 15 digs and two aces. Moore put down 10 kills and had 11 digs and Van Pelt totaled seven kills and three blocks.
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) and
Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) registered 20 and 12 assists, respectively, and
Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) led the Red Dragons with 22 digs, followed by Haegele's 19.
Cortland closes the tournament Saturday with matches versus Utica College at 11 a.m. and Nazareth College at 3 p.m.
