Panthers Split Opening Day with Medaille

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's tennis team kick-started their 2022 campaign with a doubleheader against Medaille. The Panthers fell 5-3 to the Mavericks in the opener but battled back to win the nightcap 6-3.

Game 1:

The Panthers fell behind the first match of the day early, as they lost 2 of 3 doubles matches. Madilyn Rodgers and Lydia Ehrensberger were able to grind out a win to get the Panthers on the board. They got ahead 2-0 early and then were able to maintain an advantage throughout the rest of the match.

In individual play, the Panthers were able to tally 2 victories before the Mavericks were able to pick up the 3 wins they needed to secure the victory. Rodgers was able to pick up her second win of the day in the third singles pairing. After dropping the first set 3-6 she was able to win the second 6-2 to force a tiebreaking set. In the tiebreaker, she was able to outlast her opponent to pick up a 10-6 win. Emily Snyder was able to get the Panthers' other win. She won the first set 6-3 but then lost the second 5-7. In the tiebreaker, Snyder was able to regain control and win 10-8 to pick up the win.

Game 2:

In the second match of the day, the doubles portion finished in the same fashion as game 1. The Panthers fell at 1 and 3 but picked up a win in the 2nd pairing with another Rodgers and Ehrensberger 8-6 victory.

Unlike the first match, the Panthers dominated singles play, winning 5 of the 6 matches to secure victory.

Maya Schiplick was able to pick up her first collegiate win in the 2nd pairing, avenging a game one defeat with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Rodgers picked up her 4th point of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win at 3, and Ehrensberger won her match at 4 6-4, 7-5. Seniors Avitamarie Demieri and Emily Snyder picked up the final two points with wins at 5 and 6. Demieri won her match handily by a score of 6-1, 6-2, while Snyder picked up a 7-5, 6-4 straight sets victory.

The Panthers have started their season at 1-1 after the doubleheader. They will be right back in action on Thursday, as they will host Alfred at 4:00 p.m. at the Kessel Athletic Complex.
