Lady Lions Best D’Youville 90-63 for Fourth Straight Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – Another solid performance by the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team led to a 90-63 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent D'Youville College on Saturday afternoon in the Adler Auxiliary Gym.

The win was the fourth in a row for Penn State Altoona (6-3, 4-1 AMCC), which is now tied for the most wins in the AMCC this season heading into winter break.

"What an exciting way to end the fall semester. Going 4-0 in our homestand feels good," said Penn State Altoona head coach Casey Wilt. "Today, we distributed and shot the ball well. Lex [Alexis Cannistraci] had a big game, as she was able to hit from the inside and out."

Penn State Altoona had six players finish with double-digit scoring totals.

Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) led all players with 22 points while tying for game-highs with nine rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Paige Burk (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) scored 13 points, including going 3-for-4 from three-point range.

Sydney Snyder (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) finished with 12 points, four assists, and two blocks, and Finnley Christine (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) also scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists, and a game-high four steals.

Sarah Huston (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) and Kassidy Sorichetti (Halifax, PA/Halifax) also had strong games coming off the bench. Huston scored 10 points while also totaling three assists and three steals, and Sorichetti finished with a season-high 10 points while grabbing three rebounds.

"It's nice having a squad with so many scoring threats. To end the game with six individuals in double figures is great," said Wilt. "This group is fun to watch because they have great chemistry. Each of them wants to see one another find success. You see that on the floor with their unselfish play, and our bench is also electrifying."

D'Youville (5-2, 2-2 AMCC) got 10 points apiece from Danielle Hore and Sydney Alton, while Brigid McKeone, Sarah Wittek, and Emmalea Erlandson finished with seven points each.

"D'Youville has a very talented group of players. Danielle and Haley [Kirisits] had been consistent contributors, and we knew they were going to get buckets. Our focus was on limiting their shot opportunities," Wilt explained. "Danielle scored eight of her 10 in the first. I thought our guards did a nice job containing her, and then when she got past them, the bigs jumped in the gaps to redirect her elsewhere. They're a tough crew to battle."

Penn State Altoona got out to a lead early in the first quarter, en route to a four-point advantage by the period's end. Back-to-back D'Youville turnovers resulted in a pair of layups by Christine that helped the Lady Lions jump out to a 4-0 lead, and layups by Cannistraci and Burk made it 10-3 by the 7-minute mark. Jumpers from Huston and Kaley Strittmatter (Williamsburg, PA/Penn Cambria) late in the quarter made it 22-16, before Alton's layup got two points back for D'Youville before the end of the period.

The Lady Lions grew their lead during the second quarter, in which the home team posted a 26-12 scoring advantage. Three-pointers from Huston and Snyder early in the quarter highlighted a 10-0 run to start the period, and Burk's three at 5:33 gave Penn State Altoona a 14-point lead, 36-22. Back-to-back layups from Chloe Inman (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) preceded three-pointers from Burk and Snyder that put the Lady Lions up 46-27 with 2:58 remaining in the half. Sorichetti tacked a pair of free throws on, and Penn State Altoona went into halftime with a 48-30 lead.

Penn State Altoona continued to expand its lead in the third quarter. Christine's layup at 5:47 gave her team a 20-point lead, 55-35, and Snyder's three-pointer at 3:01 made it 62-41. A trio of free throws by Cannistraci within the final 20 seconds of the period helped the Lady Lions to a 68-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Lions kept rolling in the game's final quarter, going on to take their largest lead of the game at the 3:31 mark, when Burk connected for another three-pointer to give her team an 88-55 advantage.

Penn State Altoona had an impressive showing as a team, leading D'Youville in points off turnovers (29-11), fastbreak points (14-2), and assists (19-6). The Lady Lions also limited the opponent to a 29.6 percent field goal percentage while forcing 24 turnovers.

However, D'Youville finished the game with a 54-32 edge in rebounds.

"I'm not pleased with our rebounding tonight," said Wilt. "They dominated us on the boards. If we want to remain as a top contender in the AMCC, we will need to do a much better job."

Now, Penn State Altoona women's basketball will head into winter break before returning in January with three straight AMCC road games. The Lady Lions' first game back from break is Saturday, January 4, when the team will head to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Medaille College at 4:00 p.m.
