Lions Sweep Wilkes 3-0

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's volleyball team took care of non-conference opponent Wilkes University on Thursday evening, sweeping the Colonels 3-0 at the Marts Center.

The Lions (2-5) earned their second straight win this season by scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 26-24.

Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) totaled a match-high 12.5 points for Penn State Altoona, accumulating 10 kills, two service aces, and one block assist to go along with nine digs. Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) had 12 points on 11 kills and an ace, and Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) posted 10 points on six kills, a team-high three aces, and two block assists. Taylor Kilmer (Julian, PA/Bald Eagle) added four kills and a block assist.

Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) led all players in the match with 28 assists for the Lions, and she also recorded four kills and seven digs.

Erin Lutz (State College, PA/State College) also had a match-high statistic with 21 digs, and she notched two aces. Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) also recorded a pair of aces.

Morgan Fussell (Blairsville, GA/Union County) and Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) had one kill and one block assist each.

Penn State Altoona opened the first set by jumping out to a 5-1 lead, including getting back-to-back aces from Barnhart. A kill from Myers later increased the Lions' lead to eight, 13-5, and Myers and Fussell teamed up on a block to keep the difference at eight points, 15-7. Kills from Myers and Kilmer increased the Penn State Altoona advantage to nine, 19-10, and two aces in a row from Batrus made it 21-11. Wilkes (1-6) closed the gap to seven in the waning moments of the set, but Fussell's kill provided the 25th point for Penn State Altoona to prevail in the opening set.

The Lions again jumped out to a solid lead in the second set, working their way out to a 6-2 advantage early that included two kills apiece from Barnhart and Mock. A kill by Kilmer increased the Penn State Altoona advantage to 12-5, and Barnhart and Myers combined for a block to help make it 15-7. The Colonels battled back to tie the score at 18-18, but Penn State Altoona ended the set on a 7-2 run, capped by kills from Moran and Barnhart to close things out.

In the third set, Wilkes built as much as a five-point lead, 18-13, but Penn State Altoona battled back and grabbed a 23-22 lead on an ace from Myers. After back-and-forth scoring between the teams, Mock's kill put the Lions up 25-24, and a Wilkes attack error handed the third set and the match to Penn State Altoona.

Next up, Penn State Altoona will compete in a non-conference tri-match hosted by Dickinson College in Carlisle this Saturday, September 17. That day, the Lions will face Lebanon Valley College at 1:00 p.m. before taking on host Dickinson at 3:00 p.m.
