Baseball Drops Two at Baldwin Wallace Tournament

BEREA, Oh. - La Roche baseball dropped their first two games of the 2020 season Sunday afternoon against Oswego and Baldwin Wallace, the host of the tournament. Junior first baseman Philip Pieto smashed two solo-HR on the day, one in each contest. Pieto went 4-7 at the plate and provided a team-high 3 RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Oswego

  • After putting out the first batter, the Redhawks let up four straight hits, three of which were RBI. Oswego jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first.
  • Freshman catcher Nathan Stutz (Butler, PA/Butler) put LRU on the board with a solo shot in the top of the 3rd.
  • The Redhawks put out the first two batters in the bottom of third before allowing two singles and walk, Oswego led 5-1 after three.
  • Ryan Lynn opened the fourth inning with a single and stolen base. After a walk and passed ball put Redhawk runners on 2nd and 3rd base, the Lakers committed a balk, allowing Lynn to cross the plate. Philip Pieto hit an RBI single to left to bring the game within two runs.
  • Pieto cut the deficit to just one with a solo homer over the left field fence in the top of the 6th.
  • Oswego scored three runs in the seventh to pull away
  • Senior RHP Tre Thomas started the game for LRU. He pitched 5.0 innings and allowed nine hits and five earned runs while striking out one batter and walking two. Sophomore RHP Zach Oddi came in to relieve Thomas in the sixth, he pitched 3.0 innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out and walking a batter.

Baldwin Wallace

  • Pieto dinked his second solo shot of the day to left field in the top of the second to out LRU up 1-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets CF Dudley Taw hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the fifth to put BW on the board. The Yellow Jackets hit an RBI single in the fifth as well to gain a 3-1 lead.
  • Back-to-back RBI singles from Junior Dylan Ubran and Sophomore Jackson Rodgers in the top of the sixth evened the score 3-3
  • BW's Tony LoParo hit an RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the 7th to put the Yellow Jackets back on top 4-3
  • After Philip Pieto and Nathan Stutz hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the ninth to put LRU ahead 5-4, the umpires called the game because it became too dark to play. Therefore, the score was reverted back to the 8th inning and Baldwin Wallace won 4-3.
  • Junior LHP Tristan Tinney got the start in Game 2. He pitched 5.0 innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out seven batters and walking just one. Sophomore RHP Shawn Marcellus relieved Tinney in the sixth, Marcellus pitched 3.0 innings and allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out three batters.

NEXT UP: The Redhawks travel to Port Charlotte, FL in two weeks to play six games in the Snowbird Classic from March 8th to March 12th. LRU opens the tournament against Swarthmore on Sunday, March 8th at 3:00 p.m.
