Anthony Smith controls the ball

Pioneers Down Wildcats

The Alfred State men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 victory over Cazenovia on a wet and foggy evening. The Pioneers improve to 2-3 on the season heading into the start of AMCC play.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 13th minute with a series of nice passes led to a goal by Anthony Smith (Springville Griffith). Jackson Powers (Syracuse/Westhill) started the play with a nice pass to Josh Price (Greece Arcadia) whose was able to find Smith for the goal.

Luke Schlachter evened up the game just over three minutes later when he was able to slide a free kick from just outside of the box into the back of the net.

A pretty play just under twenty minutes in the game gave the Pioneers the lead for good. Andres Mateos (Batavia) sent a corner kick to the far post to Nuri Sarbudak (Pittsford Mendon) who got it back to Mateos. Mateos was able to bury his shot and give the Pioneers the 2-1 lead.

6:56 into the 2nd half, Alfred State added to their lead when Jack Leahy (Pittsford Sutherland) netted his first goal after getting set up by Smith.

Cazenovia (3-1) held a slight 16 to 14 shot advantage in the game. Thad Grierson (Perry) made six saves in net to earn the victory.

The blue & gold will head to Pitt-Bradford on Saturday for a 3:15 p.m. contest with the Panthers as they open up conference play.
