Exciting Rally Came Up Short as Hawks Fall Twice to Bobcats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBURG, Pa. – After the exciting first-game rally fell short, the Hilbert College baseball team slipped in the second game and suffered a pair of AMCC losses to Pitt-Greensburg today.  The Hawks dropped to 2-8 in league and 5-20 on the year while the Bobcats improved to 6-6 as they fight for a play-off spot.

Greensburg jumped out to an early 1-0 first inning lead which would extend to a three-run lead by the bottom of the second.    The Hawks posted single runs in the fifth and sixth innings as Greensburg continued to build a lead.

Down 7-2 at the top of the 7th, Hilbert rallied with four runs but fell short of a come-back win.  With a 7-6 lead, Greensburg grabbed the opening game without heading the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ryan Bonafede walked to first then moved around the horn and home thanks to Joshua Maier's RBI single in the fifth.

Daniel Christmann made it to first on a fielder's choice and moved to third during Paul Wujek's at bat.  Ryan Bonafede singled to center and knocked in the Hawks second run of the day in the top of the sixth.

With Hilbert trailing 5-2 at this point, the Bobcats connected for two big hits.  After they opened with a double bagger, they poked a two-run home run to right field lifting their total to 7.  Andrew Cartaginese took the mound and closed the game for Logan Parachoniak who tossed 5.1 innings while surrendering nine hits and five earned runs against 25 batters.  Cartaginese got out of the inning with a pop-up out, a Bobcat single and then striking out the next batter.

Greensburg started the 7th with a pitching change.  Hilbert's first batter flied out to center before pinch hitter Mark Anderson walked. Tyler Shaw also entered the game as a pinch hitter and he made that same walk to first as Anderson did.  Enter a new pitcher and a similar result with the next Hilbert batter striking out.  Daniel Christmann then singled to left field loading the bases.

Anthony Wurstner hit a 2RBI single to center field and Paul Wujek added a single to left field which loaded the bases again. Insert a third Bobcat pitcher who gave up another 2RBI single to Ryan Bonafede which set the score at 6-7.

The Bobcats moved their short stop to the mound, as the fourth pitcher to attempt the plug the Hilbert rally which got crazy with a 2-out count.  The Hawks final batter grounded out to the new short stop which gave Greensburg the win.

Bonafede went two for three with 3 RBI's and Anthony Wurstner was credited with 2RBI's on his one hit late in the game.

The Hawks started on top in the second game.  Anthony Wurstner singled to center field and moved to second base on a passed ball.  He continued his trek home on Ryan Bonafede's fielder's choice poke in the top of the first inning.  Hilbert held that 1-0 lead through the middle of the fifth inning.  Greensburg  knotted the game in the bottom half and stayed that way until the bottom of the 8th.

The Bobcats warmed up for four runs and, after taking the 5-1 lead, held tough on defense to secure the win.

Matt Goraj earned the start on the mound and covered 2 innings before Tyler Wangler went 3 innings.  Winfred Nelson took the loss giving up three hits which lead to the four runs in the 8th inning.  Andrew Cartaginese once again closed the game for the Hawks picking up the last out of the inning.

Five different Hawks connected for a single hit as Hilbert was outhit, 9-5.

With the news of cooler weather returning to western New York, the Hawks look to host D'Youville College Wednesday, April 22 at 1pm.
