Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Morgan Scores Twice in Hilbert's 3-1 Win over Alfred

HAMBURG, N.Y.Jackie Morgan's two markers lifted the Hawks to a 3-1 non-conference victory over visiting Alfred University (1-4-1) this afternoon in women's soccer.  Hilbert improved to 3-2 and maintains an upper standing in the AMCC league standings based on two weeks of play.

After a scoreless first half, Hilbert pushed two points on the score board sixty-eight seconds apart.

Shannon Rogers took Brooklynn Gormel's long pass on the left side of the field to the top of the box and fired a hard shot to the lower right corner of the goal.  The Hawks maintained their control of the pace of the game after the kick off and Jackie Morgan took a Kaitlyn Layman pass to the middle and weaved through defenders.  Her shot rolled into the net past the Saxon goalie for the game winner.

In the 84th minute, with Hilbert on the attack, a Saxon defender slapped the ball around on the field with her hands which awarded the Hawks a penalty kick.  Morgan struck again for her third goal this season and padded the lead.

Alfred's Emily Wright chipped a re-start, hard shot over the Hilbert defensive wall, her score prevented Jenna Castricone from earning her first shut-out victory.

The first forty-five minutes of action were all along the sidelines.  There wasn't much flow to the game because a majority of the time, both teams were winding up for throw-ins.

Hilbert did have a few chances for scores in the first half.  Rogers had a hard shot punched over the cross bar in the 32nd minute and Jennifer Colvin rocket went high in the 42nd minute.

Alfred gave Hilbert one scare but Brooklynn Gormel sprinted in from the left side and knocked the ball out of the striker's space to prevent a sure good-look at the frame.

Both teams were credited with 16 shots and Hilbert had two-more shots on goal than AU (11-9).  Jackie Morgan (5), Shannon Rogers (4) and Jennifer Colvin (4) collected 13 of the team's shots.

Castricone posted seven saves as she improved to 3-2 between the pipes.

Hilbert returns to action tomorrow when they travel with the men's team to Latrobe, Pa for a non-conference game against St. Vincent College.
