Women’s Soccer Shuts Out SVC for First Win

LATROBE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team bagged its first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon, when the Lions blanked non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College 1-0 at UPMC Field.

Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) netted her first goal of the season for Penn State Altoona (1-3-2), and Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) recorded six saves for her first win of the season and second shutout.

The Lions and Bearcats (3-2) played to a 0-0 deadlock at halftime, and the game remained scoreless until McConnell scored the day's lone goal midway through the second half.

Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) sent a pass forward to the right side of the St. Vincent box, where it was collected by McConnell, who streaked in on goal and fired a hard-angle shot. McConnell's shot was saved, but the rebound came right back to her, and she touched the ball past the keeper to make it 1-0 at 62:47.

That goal was all that the Lions needed for the victory, as Penn State Altoona kept St. Vincent off of the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Penn State Altoona posted a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks on the day, while the teams tied 10-10 in shots attempted, with St. Vincent earning a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

McConnell led all players in the game with four shot attempts, including putting three shots on goal. Smith and Rachel Rutkowski (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) finished with one shot on goal apiece.

Next, the Lions will return home to take non-conference opponent Penn College next Wednesday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m.
