Baseball Comes Up Big in 7th Inning Win

FT. PIERCE, Fl. – After grabbing a big 6-0 early morning victory over Marywood University, the Hilbert College baseball team let one slip by them and fell in the second game (1-0) today during their second day of the team's week-long spring training.

Sal Carroccia produced a shutout victory for Hilbert covering all seven innings and struck out three while giving up four hits.  He joined Justin Hulbert, yesterday's complete game winning pitcher, to lead the Hawks to their second win of the season.

The pace of the first game was quick.  No more than four of five batters per team per inning producing a 0-0 score through six innings.

In the top of the 7th, Joshua Maier earned a base-on-balls, Ryan Bonafede singled to center field and then Bradley Perrin's bunt to third base advanced the runners setting up a bases loaded situation.

Michael Vogel and Noah Rasnik hit back-to-back shots to the short stop (fielder's choice) which resulted in single runs each time.

The top of the order swung around and Paul Wujek and Anthony Wurstner connected for single RBIs to give Hilbert a 4-0 lead.

Kevin Moore's shot to left field sent Wurstner (who stole second base) and Wujek home for the final 6-0 lead.

Hilbert's defense held tight in the bottom of the seventh as Hilbert grabbed their second win.

Wurstner went 2 for 3 with a double and five different guys knocked in the six runs.

The night cap combined a solid effort from Colby Parachoniak, Kevin Moore and Tyler Wangler.  Parachoniak faced 14 batters, struck out four and relied on his defense to get outs (6) while giving up only two hits.  Moore and Wangler combined for the final three innings of work with Wangler striking out one and letting his outfield do the rest.  Moore got caught with back-to-back hits that resulted in the single run crossing home in the 6th inning.

Both teams played great defense and they each turned two double-plays early in the game.   Hilbert did it in back-to-back innings (first and second) while Marywood found the timing in the first and fourth innings.

Only three Hawks made it to first base.  Anthony Wurstner picked up the single hit for Hilbert and Michael Best and Michael Voveris were sent walking to the corner pad hoping for some action to push them around the horn.

The Hawks have the afternoon off to recover as they have two 9-inning games on tap tomorrow.  Hilbert will face Westminster College at 1 pm and then battle the University of Northwestern (MN) at 4:30 pm.  Then, they can enjoy the warmth of Florida since Wednesday is an off day to just practice.
