Smith, McConnell Lead Lions to Overtime Win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Mallorie Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) and Sadie McConnell (New Enterprise, PA/Northern Bedford) spearheaded Penn State Altoona women's soccer's offense on Wednesday night, when the Lions pulled out a wild 4-3 victory in overtime against non-conference opponent Penn College at UPMC Field.

Smith scored three goals for the Lions (5-5), while McConnell scored a goal and recorded three assists. The win is Penn State Altoona's fourth in a row and fifth in its last six games.

Adeline Baustert (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) started in goal for the Lions and played the first half, making two saves along the way. Jadyn Michael (Berwick, PA/Berwick) entered in relief early in the second half and played the remainder of the game, making two saves and picking up her first collegiate win.

Penn College (4-8) scored the game's first goal just 5:47 into the first half, when Ashley Donat's shot off of Teagan Willey's cross found the back of the net to put the Wildcats on the board.

Smith and McConnell teamed up to tie the game at 14:27, however. McConnell's cross from the right side found Smith, who headed it past the keeper to even the score at 1-1. The pair combined for the Lions' next goal at 37:04, when McConnell's corner kick was headed into the goal by Smith to make it 2-1.

Penn College tied things up early in the second half. A rebounded shot off of the left goal post deflected to Cassie Johnson, whose shot found the back of the net at 56:49 to knot the score 2-2.

Penn State Altoona made quick work to reclaim the lead, jumping back in front less than three minutes later. Sarah Huston (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) set up McConnell with a pass, and McConnell sent a shot from the right side into the upper left corner of the goal at 59:31 to put the Lions back in front, 3-2. The goal was McConnell's fifth of the season.

The Lions appeared poised to win in regulation, but Penn College scored the game-tying goal in the 89th minute to ultimately send the game to overtime. Johnson bagged her second score of the night, sending a 20-yard shot just under the crossbar at the 88:55 mark to tie the game at 3-3.

But Smith and McConnell came together once more to put the game-winning goal on the board for Penn State Altoona in overtime. McConnell's corner kick came to Smith, who headed it past the keeper and into the bottom left corner of the goal at 95:42 to give the Lions a walk-off win. The score was Smith's fifth goal of the season.

Penn State Altoona finished the game with big shot advantages over Penn College, leading the Wildcats 23-11 in shot attempts and 16-7 in shots on goal. The Lions also had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

McConnell led all players in shots attempts with six, and she tied for the game-high in shots on goal with four. Smith attempted five shots, with four coming on goal. KK Wolfe (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) recorded four shot attempts, putting all of them on goal.

McConnell's total of three assists in the game ties for the second-most assists in a single game in Penn State Altoona women's soccer history. Additionally, Smith's total of three goals is tied for the fourth-most goals in a game in program history, and her six points on the night ties for the ninth-most points in a game in team history.

Women's soccer is back at home for its next game, when the Lions will host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend at Spring Run Stadium this Saturday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. That game has been selected as this week's AMCC Women's Soccer Game of the Week.
