Schwab Leads Hawks in NEAC Tri-match

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College hosted a NEAC tri-match this afternoon with two cross-town rivals.

Medaille College (13-10, 10-1) went away with two 3-set sweeps over D'Youville College (12-6, 10-1) and the Hawks while Hilbert (1-21, 1-10) fell to the Spartans in the Friday afternoon opening match.

Korey Schwab led the Hawks with 22 kills (3.67 kps) while Brett Kane led with a .267 hitting percentage adding 14 kills and three service aces.

Adam Heftka assisted on 33 kills and was active above the net picking up six total blocks.

Andrew Duncan posted 8 total blocks, pairing up with his teammates for six block assists.

Ryan Ratajczak and Brett Kane each collected six digs in the six sets today.

All nine games today were competitive with neither team pulling away early in the set.  Hilbert stayed with D'Youville and Medaille in every set and at times held leads after going on mini-runs.  But untimely hitting errors and service errors contributed to losses today for the Hawks.  Medaille constantly attacked the net against D'Youville and played to control the net behind their powerful hitting.

The Hawks suffered a 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 3 pm match loss.  Korey Schwab strung together nine kills with two block assists.  Adam Heftka and Brett Kane shared setting duties and Heftka tossed eight assists in while Kane picked up five along with three kills and four digs.   Ryan Brewster chipped in four kills and a solo block.

Medaille controlled the pace of the middle game to knock D'Youville out of the undefeated NEAC teams.  The Mavericks outlasted the Spartans for a 25-23 first set win and then cruised to 25-19 and 25-11 scores.

Before the 7 pm started the Hawks volleyball program honored Andrew Duncan and Ryan Ratajczak who played their final HOME game tonight.  Both seniors became the Hawks All Time career leader during their time in the royal and white.

Hilbert was slow to pick-up the pace in the first set and fell 25-19.  But the Hawks were prepared in the second and matched point for point with Medaille right from the start.  The Mavericks were able to stretched to their largest lead, 20-16, but the Hawks rallied and forced a 20-20 tie.  The visitors claimed the next five points to earn a 25-20 win.  The third set was similar to the second, although it was Hilbert who always jumped ahead one point at a time.  The Hawks fought back from a 12-15 deficit to force a 16-16 tie and stayed with the Mavs the rest of the way until the final 25-23 score.

Korey Schwab and Brett Kane led with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.  Both hitters added two digs and trailed Ryan Ratajczak's team-high three digs.

Andrew Duncan and Adam Heftka both earned one solo and three assisted blocks as they tried to slow the Mavericks.  Heftka assisted 25 times and tossed down two service aces as did Brett Kane.

Hilbert returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Buffalo for two tough matches.  They are set to battle #9 NYU at 1pm in the College Center gym at D'Youville.  The Hawks then van over to North Buffalo and challenge #8 Carthage at Medaille's Sullivan Center at 4pm.
