Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Heiler Hits From Outside as Hawks Pick-Up Win

CRESSON, Pa. – After a slow start by both teams, the Hilbert College women's basketball team exploded with a big second quarter as they rolled to a 20-point AMCC victory over Mount Aloysius Sunday.

Samantha Heiler led a balanced attack with four players posting double–digit scoring as the Hawks improved to 5-6 in the league after they split games against the Mounties this season.

Heiler (12), Shannon Rogers (11), Katelyn Proy (10) and Kelsi Ebert (10) combined for 43 of the team's points.  Wyann Jackson pumped in nine points and Emily Speidel knocked down a pair of 3-pointers for six tallies.

Hilbert out-rebounded the hosts by 14 (52-38) led by Rogers and Proy who each collected 11 caroms.

Yet the royal and white committed 18 turnovers.

What kept the Hawks in the game was their 42.9 field goal percentage as they connected on 7-of-14 shots beyond the arc, led by Heiler's 4-of-5 hits.

Hilbert's aggressive defense held the Mounties to 19.7% shooting but sent them to the line 14 times – almost three-times more than the Hawks.

Ebert's lay-in and Rogers' traditional 3-point play were Hilbert's only points of the first quarter.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Heiler and Speidel started a 10-0 run and gave Hilbert a 15-7 lead and the Mounties never recovered from there.   The hosts tried a few times to even the score, but Speidel hit a long shot with one second left before half time to give Hilbert a 10-point advantage as the teams rushed to the locker rooms.

The Hawks out-scored Mt. Aloysius 13-7 in the third quarter and never relinquished the double-digit lead.

Jackson found the bottom of the net with two feet outside the line just before Ebert and Proy scored jumpers to give Hilbert their largest lead of 23 points (47-24) with just under 8-minutes left.    A balanced offensive effort closed the game as no one from Hilbert scored more than four points leading to the final horn.

Hilbert will travel to the westside of Buffalo this week for their rematch against D'Youville College January 27th at 8pm.  Fans can view the game by following this link.
