Softball Records 36 Hits and 24 Runs in Hilbert Sweep

The Alfred State softball team (8-14, 4-4 AMCC) recorded a combined 36 hits and 24 runs to pick up their first sweep of the season over the Hilbert College Hawks (2-14, 0-4) on Friday evening at FSSJ Field in Hamburg, NY.

Game one: ASC 14, HC 2 (6 innings)

The Pioneers recorded 14 runs, 14 hits, 12 RBIs and 2 errors.

The Hawks recorded 2 runs, 4 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Nicole Youngberg (Falconer) went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs.

Sarah Boyce (Cortland) went 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs.

Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 1 run.

Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 3 run.

Felecia Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) had 3 RBIs.

How it Happened:

In the first Boyce scored on a wild pitch, Wonica and Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) scored off a single from Youngberg who scored off a sacrifice ground out from Fisher.

Hilbert scored one in the bottom of the first.  

In the second Wonica doubled to plate Boyce and Skylar Shaulis (Ovid, NY/South Seneca) and Faith Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) and Wonica scored off an error.

Hilbert scored one more in the third.

In the fourth Youngberg scored off a wild pitch.

The Pioneers recorded five runs in the sixth. Wonica scored off a single from Felecia Capito, Faith Capito and Youngberg scored off a double from Fisher, Felecia Capito scored off a single from Shaulis and Fisher scored off a fielder's choice.

Pioneer Pitching:

Fisher (W, 5-7) pitched 6 innings and allowed 4 hits, 2 runs, walked 1 and struck out 4.

Game two: ASC 10, HC 3

The Pioneers recorded 10 runs, 22 hits, 10 RBIs and 0 errors.

The Hawks recorded 3 runs, 10 hits, 2 RBIs and 0 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Griffith went 4-for-5 with 1 run and 1 RBI and 2 runs.

Lauryn Engle (Elba) went 4-for-5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs.

Youngberg went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs.

Felecia Capito went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

Wonica went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs.

Shaulis went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Brianna Dittman (Brooklyn/James Madison) went 2-for-4 with 1 run.

Faith Capito had 2 RBIs.

How it Happened:

Hilbert scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second.

In the third Youngberg singled to plate Griffith.

In the fourth Shaulis singled to bring home Engle, Wonica was hit by a pitch that scored Dittman, Youngberg singled to plate Boyce, Faith Capito singled to bring home Wonica and Griffith and Felecia Capito singled to plate Youngberg.

The Hawks scored one run in the fourth and one in the fifth.

In the sixth Engle singled to bring home Youngberg and Shaulis singled to plate Engle.

In the seventh Felecia Capito doubled to plate Wonica and Faith Capito.

Pioneer Pitching:

Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) (W, 3-7) pitched 7 innings and allowed 10 hits, 3 runs, walked 2 and struck out 5.

The Pioneers play at Pitt. Greensburg for a conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23.
