Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Schwab Becomes All Time Service Ace Leader

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Hilbert College went 1-1 on day-two of the NEAC cross-over matches hosted by Wilson College today.

Korey Schwab became the men's volleyball program's All Time Service Ace leader as the Hawks moved to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in league standings, good for 5th place in the nine-team league.

After an early morning victory over Wilson College, a first-year program, the Hilbert College men's volleyball team had to wait through a few matches until they could battle Penn State Altoona in the night cap.  The Hawks gave Altoona a good fight, winning the first set, then challenging hard in the second and third sets, but cooled-off in the fourth.

Hilbert rushed out to a 26-24 opening-set victory then fell in straight sets to the Lions (25-23, 25-22, 25-18).

Hilbert collected three more kills, but finished with four additional hitting errors.  The Lions collected 13 blocks to Hilbert's seven and posted a slight hitting percentage advantage (.252 v .231).  Each team finished with 12 service errors.

Michael Podgorny posted 16 kills (.462), 11 digs and chipped in a pair of block assists.  Tyler Sieczkarek added 12 kills (.320) just four more than Korey Schwab who was one kill shy of double-digits.

Ryan Schwab was second-best with eight digs, one more than Trevor Gabamonte.

Adam Heftka led eight Hawks who were credited with assists.  The junior setter posted 35 of the team's 47 assists and had the only solo block on the team.

Earlier in the morning, Hilbert claimed 25-19, 25-19 and 25-20 set wins over Wilson.  The Hawks ended with only six more kills (36-30), but scored six points off service aces.

Korey Schwab led the attack with nine kills (one error) in 18 attempts (.444) and his career setting service ace.

Sieczkarek followed with eight kills as three other Hawks posted five kills each.

Brett Kane assisted on 10 kills and added three service aces.   Heftka led with 20 of the team's 36 assists and he added three solo blocks while hitting .571 (5/1/7).

Ryan Schwab led the defensive effort with a team-high five digs.

With a week off before they play again, the Hawks will continue to focus on making the NEAC play-offs.  Hilbert heads to Utica/Marcy, NY for the next cross-over weekend hosted by SUNY Poly March 12 and 13.  The Hawks will face Keuka, Wells and the hosts for the second time this season.
