AUBURNDALE, Fla. - March 9, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team began its 2019 season with a doubleheader against Medaille to start its annual spring break trip to Florida. The Chargers dropped the first game 8-4 and the second game 7-0.
The team will play nine games in seven days.
The Chargers are 0-2 and will play a doubleheader against SUNY Poly tomorrow in Winter Haven. Medaille goes to 2-0.
GAME ONE - Medaille 8, Colby-Sawyer 4
After a pair of scoreless innings, in the season opener for both teams, each side put across a run in the third. Colby-Sawyer took a 2-1 lead on a
Tim Unczur homerun in the top of the fourth.
The Mavericks broke through in the bottom of the sixth for seven runs to take control of the game. Tim Fuerst and Stephen Kemp each had a two-run single in the inning.
Colby-Sawyer was able to get a pair back in the top of the seventh with a
Liam Datres de la Blotier RBI double and a run-scoring single from
Charlie Danaher, but it was not enough as Medaille won 8-4.
Datres de la Blotier finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Peter Grunzweig earned the win after tossing 6.2 innings with four runs allowed and five strike outs.
Ryan Glendye took the loss for the Chargers.
Kyle McShera made his first collegiate appearance and struck out one in an inning.
Jackson Parmentier recorded his first collegiate hit for the Chargers.
GAME TWO - Medialle 7, Colby-Sawyer 0
Kemp began the game with a lead-off homerun to stake Medaille to a 1-0 lead.
Medaille plated five in the top of the third to take a 6-0 advantage. Shawn Filas knocked in a pair with one of the team's three run-scoring doubles in the frame.
The Mavericks tacked on another run in the fourth on a Filas RBI triple.
Dylan Creasey went the distance for the Mavericks. He allowed six hits and struck out 10 to earn the shutout victory.
Kaelen Close suffered the loss in his first start collegiate start.
Derek Griffin tossed two innings of relief with one strikeout, while
Owen Cottle pitched a scoreless seventh inning with one hit and a strikeout.
Brendan Barrett led the Colby-Sawyer hitters with a 2-for-3 performance.
Kristian Viljanen notched his first collegiate hit.
