The Barons Got The Best of the Hawks

STEUBENVILLE, OH  –  Brooklynn Gormel and Calista Mis combined for seven of the Hawks nine goals this afternoon as the women's lacrosse team fell in a 14-9 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match to Franciscan University.

Gormel notched four goals, going 2-for-2 in free position shots while scooping four ground balls, causing three turnovers and winning three draw controls.  Mis tossed in three goals and led the Hawks with five ground balls while adding three caused turnovers on defense.

Aaryonah Vaughn scored once and added a pair of assists and Alyssa Siracuse caused a team-high four turnovers and hustled to four ground balls.  Josephine Ban added one goal and won two draw controls.

Ashley Repine was credited with nine saves in goal, picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers in the crease.

Hilbert closed the day on the positive side with four more shots than the Barons (22-23 in shots on goal), five more ground balls, and four fewer turnovers but won only seven of the 25 draw controls and converted 3-of-6 free position shots.

Franciscan took a two-goal lead just five minutes into the game.  Mis sliced the score in half (2-1) and after the Barons added another score in the 18th minute, Ban brought the Hawks within one again (3-2).  Franciscan went on a 3-goal run and took a 6-3 lead to the locker room at intermission.

The Hawks manufactured six second-half goals but gave up eight hits before the final horn.

Twice Hilbert strung together a 3-0 run in the second period.  Gormel (2) and Vaughn's efforts pulled Hilbert within two points (6-8) just before the hosts rallied with a 4-goal run building a 12-6 lead with 15-minutes left in the game.  Gormel scored back-to-back goals while MIs scored the Hawks final goal of the game at 4:29.

The Hawks (0-3) have rescheduled their March 17 non-conference game against Hiram to next week.  Hilbert will host the Terriers Thursday, March 29 at Nichols School (North Buffalo) with a 5pm first draw.
