Mounties Knock Off Hilbert In Pa

CRESSON, Pa. – Hilbert College and Mt. Aloysius pushed the pace today in an Allegheny Mountain College Conference men's basketball game that featured 16 tie scores and 30 lead changes.  By the final horn, the Mounties outlasted the Hawks, 73-63, at Mt. Aloysius College.

Masia Phillips led the Hawks with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists before leaving the court in the final seconds of action.

Nicholas Parucki notched a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds while Hunter Martineau added 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Dre' Turnipseed and Joseph Braniecki matched efforts defensively with two blocks a piece, but they combined for only 14 points and eight rebounds.

Mt. Aloysius built their largest lead in the opening half (20-13) at 8:05.  That nine point margin disappeared by 3:03 after Hilbert went on 9-2 run.

Parucki started the run, Martineau and Phillips each added a three-point play while Turnipseed finished a Phillips steal into a bucket in the paint.  Braniecki hit a jumper to finish the run.

From that point on, Phillips (5) and Parucki helped the Hawks hustled to a 29-26 half time lead.

Both teams sank 11 field goals and hit a pair of 3-pointers by the break.  Hilbert built their advantage from the foul line, going 5-for-9 as the hosts were perfect 2-for-2.

The Hawks maintained their advantage three minutes into the second half and Alex Karamanos' free throw stretched Hilbert to a five point lead 31-26.  But slowly, Mt. Aloysius crawled back and regained control.

Twice the Mounties stretched their lead to four points.  Martineau's five point run tilted the score back to Hilbert (at 12:39) then a four-point push by Phillips knotted the score at 49.49 (6:54).

While Hilbert turned their final 15 possessions into five buckets and four free throws, the hosts made only two empty trips, scoring either from the field or foul line thirteen times to pull out the ten point win.

The Hawks (5-14, 1-11 AMCC)  return to the road this coming week when they travel to Pitt-Bradford January 30th for an 8pm rematch against the Panthers.  Hilbert went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final two minutes which propelled the Hawks to their first AMCC victory two and a half weeks ago.
