CRESSON, Pa. – The Hilbert Hawks returned to action this afternoon in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference double header baseball game at Mt. Aloysius College.
Hilbert suffered a 9-7 defeat in the opening game and rallied late in the night cap, but slipped 13-8 to the Mounties as they moved to 3-7 in league standings and 6-17 overall.
Senior
Winfred Nelson went 5-for-9 on the day while freshman
Connor Duck hit his first grand slam as a Hawk and sophomore
Brandon Zicari went 3-for-3 in the night cap.
GAME ONE
Hilbert put runs on the board in six of the seven innings in the 1pm game. The Hawks missed the 6th even though they earned a pair in the 5th inning. The Mounties strung together nine runs between the 2nd through 5th innings to win 9-7.
Ryan Samuels led the Hawks with 3RBIs pushing in both runs in the 5th inning.
Ian Moran and
Winfred Nelson each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Connor Duck,
Tristan Aldinger (stolen base) and
Treyton delaCuesta each poked triples in the early game.
Zachary Crane (2-3), who split duties with
Michael Goodberry on the mound, gave up eight hits and eight earned runs.
GAME TWO
Zicari scored one run, went 3-for-3 with 2RBI and Nelson had another strong game at the plate earning three hits off five at bats.
Hilbert knotted the game at 2-2 in the 5th and then took a 3-2 lead by the middle of the 6th. The Mounties tacked on four runs in the 6th, one in the 7th and six more in the 8th which gave them a 13-3 lead.
With two outs in the top of the 9th, Zicari hit an RBI single to extend the game. Three batters later,
Connor Duck hit his Grand Slam to close the team's scoring with four additional runs.
Aldinger (2) and delaCuesta stole three bases in the night cap.
Derek Switzer (2-2) went 5.2 innings giving up six hits and three earned runs.
The Hawks will face Medaille College in their first Buffalo Cup series of the 2018 season. The double header is set for Tuesday, April 17 at McCarthy Park in Buffalo. Keep an eye on the weather forecast.
