Hawks Survive A Triple Header On Last Day of Spring Training

MYRTLE BEACH, SC  – With their backs up against the wall in their final day of competition in the Fastpitch Dreams Softball Classic, the Hilbert Hawks battled through a triple-header series today, thanks to yesterday's rain-outs.

Hilbert dropped a close 1-0 game to Waynesburg in the 12:00 pm game and then surrendered seven runs to the Muhlenberg Mules in the 4:00 pm game.  The Hawks played to an late-game, 8-7 defeat against Cedar Crest in the 7:00 pm night cap.

Melanie Basile went 5-for-11, as she and Lauryn Scott earned the Hawks only doubles during the day.

Marisa McIntyre tossed two complete games, struck out 16 and gave up seven earned runs spanning both 1-run losses.

GAME ONE

  • Neither team sent more than five batters to the plate in any of the seven innings.
  • Maia Delaney and Bailey Budziszewski earned hits in the first inning, Marisa McIntyre singled through the right side in the second inning and Melanie Basile and Budziszewski poked hits to the outfield in the 3rd.
  • McIntyre shut down the Yellow Jackets, struck out four and limited them to a pair of hits, as both teams went to the 4th in a scoreless tie.
  • Wayensburg, with two outs at the bottom of the 4th, placed a pair of runner on bags thanks to back-to-back walks.  An error in the outfield allowed the fifth batter to take first base and pushed what turned out to be the winning run home from second.
  • The Hawks picked up three more hits (Victoria Grayson, Lauryn Scott and Delaney) but they weren't able to manufacture enough steam for the win.
  • McIntyre struck nine out and walked three.  Delaney and Budziszewski earned four of the team's eight hits in the loss.

GAME TWO

  • The Mules starting pitcher struck ten out and her back-up added two more picks as they limited Hilbert to three hits in the seven inning game.
  • Muhlenburg held a 5-run lead by the time Emma McNamara earned the Hawks' first hit from the eight hole.
  • Delaney singled up the middle and made it to second base in the 6th inning and Basile, who singled to left field, got caught in the game's only double play as she was advancing on the next at bat.
  • Budziszewski (0-4) took the loss giving up nine hits, four unearned runs in 2.0 innings.  Kaitlyn Barone came in for relief and struck out one.

GAME THREE

  • Both teams tacked three runs together before the start of the second inning setting a 3-3 score.
  • Delaney got a base-on-balls and moved to third after Alyssa Barnas singled to center field.
  • Delaney was thrown out stealing home but Barnas scored off Basile's double to center the next at bat.
  • Budziszewski scored Basile and pushed Grayson, who earned another hit, to third base.
  • McIntyre hit a groundout RBI to finish the scoring in the first inning.
  • Cedar Crest added a pair in the bottom of the second before Hilbert exploded with four runs in the top of the third.
  • Basile singled again at the top of the 3rd and was walked home off the Hawk's fourth batter.
  • Scott's 2RBI single cleared the back side of the bases for two more runs and with bases loaded one more time, Cedar Crest walked in Hilbert's seventh run of the game.
  • The Falcons evened the score once more before the middle of the game with two more runs in the third.
  • After matching scoreless innings, the Falcons took first base off a fly ball to center and, with two outs, knocked in the winning run fueled by an RBI double to the outfield in the bottom of the 6th.
  • Hilbert couldn't manufacture any runs in the 7th and suffered their final loss in Myrtle Beach.
  • Basile went 3-for-4, scored two runs and one RBI.  Grayson earned two hits and led the Hawks with 2RBI as did McIntyre.
  • McIntyre struck out seven, gave up 12 hits with seven earned runs.
