Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Turnovers Gave the Game Away to La Roche

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College made a good run at the top-ranked La Roche men's basketball team this afternoon, but late-game Hawk turnovers assured the visitors a 93-79 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory.

La Roche stayed perfect in league play (10-0) and pushed their overall record to 15-2.  The Hawks fell to 5-12 overall and 1-9 in AMCC.

Masia Phillips tossed in 17 points (8-of-14 from the floor) and dished seven assists, both team-highs.

Nicholas Parucki made 4-of-5 free throws and finished with 15 points and two offensive rebounds off the bench, while Dre' Turnipseed hit 5-of-6 from the field and added 10 points and two blocked shots.

Both teams went 10-for-15 from the foul line but the Redhawks drained nine 3-pointers while Hilbert trailed with five hits from deep.

La Roche held a 38-25 advantage on the glass, pulling down 15 offensive rebounds even though both teams shot better than 53% from the floor.

Hilbert built a 47-46 lead by intermission.  The Hawks held the lead for most of the 20 minutes in the opening half, holding onto an 8-point lead on multiple occasions just ten minutes into the session.  The Redhawks rallied back and three times took over with their largest edge of 46-44 with 40-seconds on the clock.

But Phillips hit a jumper before the horn and lifted Hilbert on top again as both teams cleared to the locker room.

La Roche jumped ahead early in the second frame but once Alex Karamanos sank both free throws, Hilbert was back in the game, on top 61-59.

Ryan Hogan drained one of his two 3-pointers and Hunter Martineau scored a fastbreak lay up to give Hilbert a 66-61 lead.

The Redhawks went on a 13-3 run creating a five point spread in their favor (74-69) at 8:31.

Martineau (3-pointer) Parucki (FT) and Phillips (layup) flipped the score back on the Hawks side (75-74 just two minutes later.

Then five turnovers later, Hilbert found themselves in an 86-75 deficit and the game was out of reach.

The Hawks return to action in two days when they travel to Penn State Behrend January 23rd (8pm).  Behrend earned a 96-54 victory December 5 after drilling 71% from the floor and 60% beyond the arc.
