Lions End Skid With 2-1 Win Over Barons

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona men's soccer got back in the win column on Tuesday night at Spring Run Stadium, when the Lions snapped their four-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Franciscan University.

Penn State Altoona (2-10, 2-4 AMCC) persevered through a game in which it was outshot and yielded 10 corner kicks to the opponent, but the Lions made enough plays at both ends to come out with a one-goal victory over a conference foe.

Jordan Crist (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) scored his team-leading third goal of the season for Penn State Altoona, while Erikson Miguel (Luanda, Angola/Semente do Saber) scored his first goal of the year. Brant Aughenbaugh (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) and Seif Magd (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) picked up assists for the Lions.

Tanner Yaw (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) had an impressive performance in goal for Penn State Altoona, keeping his team in the game with many key stops throughout the evening. Yaw made 12 saves in total, tying for the third-most saves in a game in Penn State Altoona men's soccer history.

The Lions came up with the game's first goal late in the first half. Aughenbaugh centered a pass from the left side of the box, and it found Crist, who tapped a shot past the goalkeeper at 34:25 to put his team up 1-0.

Franciscan (7-5, 2-2 AMCC) tied things up in the early portion of the second half. Following a flurry of action in front of the net, a deflection came to Mikey Irvin, who put a shot into the left side of the goal at 56:12 to make it 1-1.

After withstanding more offensive push from the Barons, Penn State Altoona scored the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Magd passed the ball to Miguel, who fired a high, straight shot from 25 yards out into the top shelf of the goal at 87:35 to put the Lions back on top, 2-1.

Franciscan finished with a 21-6 lead in total shots attempted, including a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Barons also led 10-4 in corner kicks.

Miguel and Crist accounted for all of Penn State Altoona's shots, finishing with three shot attempts each. Miguel had three shots on goal, and Crist had one shot on goal.

The Lions' next game is on the road, as the team will head to Erie, Pa. this Saturday, October 13 to face AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend at 4:15 p.m.
