Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cold Shooting in the Final Five Minutes Hurts the Hawks

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College dominated the glass, shot the ball well from all over the floor for 35 minutes and attacked the rim, but the Hawks dropped a 76-67 Buffalo Cup game to Medaille College tonight in women's basketball.

Shannon Rogers and Taylor Corts each earned double-doubles as the Hawks were up for the challenge of breaking Medaille's six-game win streak after their opened the fall portion of their game schedule with a 1-9 record.

Rogers parked herself in the paint and powered-in 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds (six offensive), while Corts hung around the perimeter sinking a pair of 3-pointers and short jumpers for 12 and 10 rebounds.

Kelsi Ebert went 5-for-6 at the charity stripe and did her damage going to rim scoring 15 points or passing for three assists.  Emily Gawlak focused on the netting and finished with her strongest offensive performance hitting 4-of-6 beyond the arc for 14 points and she added three steals on defense.

Emily Speidel collected double-digits hitting 50% from the three-point area for 10 points.

Corts and Eberts each chipped-in a pair of buckets in the opening session when  Hilbert played through six lead changes and one tie to take the first quarter, 14-13.

The Mavericks jumped ahead by one-point twice in the early second session before Hilbert knocked in back-to-back 3's to start their run.  Gawlak and Speidel lifted Hilbert to a 22-17 spread at 7:15 and they  stretched to advantage to 8 points when Gawlak and Corts connected again behind the line followed by a Rogers lay-in with 1:22 to go before intermission.  Medaille snuck a long bucket in before the horn to slice their deficit to 33-28.

Gawlak reached again from downtown to open the third stanza giving Hilbert their 36-28 advantage again but slowly Medaille climbed back.  With 7:10 on the clock the score was tied for only the second time of the game (39-39).  Rogers hit a pair of free throws and Speidel reached from deep to stretch the score back to a five-point difference just two-minutes later.  The Mavs responded on a 9-0 run taking a 48-44 lead and held on from there to the quarter break.

Trailing 54-51 at the start of the fourth, Ebert drove the lane and scored in the paint and Gawlak canned another deep shot which gave Hilbert their final lead in the game 56-54 at 8:38.

With 5:11 on the clock, Hilbert knotted the game 63-63 off a Corts' 3-pointer, but did not connect after that.  Medaille then went to the paint for scores either off the bounce or passes into the post and held the Hawks scoreless the final five minutes.  Medaille went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe to stretch the score from a very close and well-played game to a nine-point spread.

The Hawks committed 25 turnovers taking fewer shots than the Mavericks as they gave those possessions away.  Hilbert went 9-12 at the foul line while Medaille converted 16 of 20 free throws.  Hilbert won the battle of the boards,42-27 and finished shooting 42.4% from the floor.

Hilbert (8-10, 5-7) hits the road this weekend when they travel to the league leaders, La Roche College January 28.  The Hawks are currently in a two-way tie for 6th place in the AMCC, with plenty of action remaining.
