HAMBURG, N.Y. – Travis Hicks forced a 1-1 tie in the second half, but Hilbert surrendered a late-game marker and fell in a 2-1 defeat to Wells College in men's soccer this afternoon.

The Hawks, playing short-handed all game, stayed with the Express and almost outlasted their 36-4 shots on goal and 15-2 corner kick advantage.

Nicholas Clay and Garrett Rehner kept Wells off balance in the box as they poked balls out of the air with their heads or quick footwork on the ground.  Rookie Tucker Reynolds did a great job between the posts making eight saves in his season debut.  

Hicks and Brandon Bundschuh used their speed up top, but the Hawks didn't convert in the final third of the field.

"I am proud of the boys effort on the field today," said coach Mike Ertel.  "They were resilient in the face of adversity and managed a difficult situation with a lot of maturity and heart."

Wells got on board first in the 48th minute off a header to the back of the net.  It took twenty minutes for Hilbert to push forward and Hicks fired a hard centering kick to the box which deflected off a defender and rebounded past the Express goalie. 

Wells' Junger Vargas scored his second goal of the day in the 79th minute which ultimately lifted the visitors to their first win of the season.

The Hawks return to action this Saturday when they host Washington and Jefferson College.   The Presidents will step on Hilbert's game field for the very first meeting of the two clubs September 9th at 2pm.
