Softball Starts Day With 6-4 Win, Closes With 13-12 victory for Sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College built a 6-0 lead late in the game and withstood Brevard College's 7th inning rally to capture a 6-4 victory in the softball team's first of two games today.

The Hawks continued in the afternoon with a 3:30 pm against Chatham University and battled back to earn a walk-off single, 13-12  to improve to 4-5 during spring break training.

GAME ONE

Morgan McNeill was credited with a double in the 6th inning and went 2-for-4, scored one run and joined Angelia Johnson and Alyssa Barnas with an RBI this afternoon.  Nateal Papasergi led the Hawks at the plate scoring two runs.

Rachel Allen (2-3) went the distance striking out six while giving up nine hits and one earned run.

Both teams stranded two baserunners through the first four innings.  Hilbert got on the score board in the 5th after two errors and a walk moved Johnson and Papasergi home.

The Hawks added four more runs in the top of the 6th that started with McNeill's RBI single as the second batter.  Back-to-back singles turned into two more runs and a Brevard pass ball gave Papasergi time to make it home setting the 6-0 score.

Brevard opened the 7th with a single followed by a double and quickly scored two runs off the Hawks.  The Tornadoes finished the game with three more hits that turned into two additional runs before they flew out to center field to end the game.

GAME TWO

Chatham jumped ahead early, building a 7-2 lead by the top of the 4th.  The Hawks responded with a 3rd inning 6-run explosion, yet still trailed 9-8.  By the time play moved to the 7th inning, the score was knotted at 10-10.

Hilbert found themselves down 12-10 by their final at-bats in the bottom half of the inning.

The Hawks earned three hits started by Melanie Basile. Hilbert loaded the bases after Gabriella Bongiorno walked as the fourth batter.  Papasergi followed suit with a base on balls scoring McNeill.  Angelia Johnson single to the pitcher knocked in Jenna Castricone resetting a bases-loaded situation for the third time in a row. Now, with two outs, Maia Delaney tapped the walk-off single, setting-up Bongiorno with the winning run.

Marisa McIntyre (2-2) went the full distance and finished with three strike outs, four walks, eight earned runs off 18 hits.
